Teacher explains comment,
The latter part of
November and the month of
December are exciting times
for most. With Christmas
corning, there's the shopping
to do for those special
people; the secrets kept
from children and the an-
ticipation caused by them.
,. Parties are a part of the
season also. At children's
parties, soda pop is served
and at adult parties silly pop
is served and the end result
is that you can't tell the
children.. from the adults

justifiable, criticism in the
editorial page of the T -A. I
suppose that before all and
sundry write me off as an
irresponsible, loud -mouthed
subversive, I ought to try tb
slip in a tiny word in my
defence.
If the publishing
profession can shrug off
criticism with a simple "Oh
well, that's the publishing
game", I suppose that I also
could respond, "Oh well,
that's the teaching game".
But somehow, that doesn't
seem good enough.
Being rather new at both
"games", and unused to the
attentions of reporters, .1
have found it' instructive to
note how one can say all
manner of reasonably in-
telligent things to a reporter,
but that the only thing that

the silliest thing one has
said.
I made the remark about
"going underground" with
the books -issue originally as
a kind of cyclical, throw-
away remark after the
Clinton meeting last year, at
a time when I was rather
depressed.
The pronoun "they" in my
remark was meant to refer,
not to the Board of
Education, but to those
people who wished the
removal of the books- the
board had not even made its
decision at that time.
(Maclean's spoke with me
last spring.)
1 was attempting, with a
truly breathtaking lack of
success, to point out the folly
of confronting people on this
issue. However, it was a
jocular closing comment to a
long telephone interview
with Maclean's which has
since returned to cause me
some embarrassment.
I usually try not to be quite
so silly, at least in public.
As I did say it, and to a
member of the press, I guess
I have to take my lumps; but
I am dismayed at the size of
your stick, Mr. Editor.
The events of the last
year have taught me that the
press is generally the last
place to expect a sym-
pathetic interpretation.
Yours truly,
