"Tonight we •are ap-
proaching the next major
step in our lives (tomorrow)
and no one knows what
tomorrow will bring except
that it will bury the past,
both good and bad alike."
"When tomorrow comes
let us accept it, taking the
best -of the future and bind it
to the past."
Those were the words of -
Paul Van Esbroeck, the
valedictbrian at Friday's
Commencement exercises at
South Huron District High
School.
Van Esbroeck, was one of
eight South Huron students
receiving Ontario
Scholarships for. achieving
an average of BO percent or
more in grade 13.
The others were Wes
Abbott, Susan Feaver, Rene
Kirmse, Carolyn Perry,
Eleanor Salmon, Mary
Warburton, Catherine Weido
and Heather Little. The
latter was absent as she is
attending classes in Texas.
--Some of the valedic-
torian's comments follow:
"When I started here, •1
came with the impression
that upon graduation I would
have acquired all the
wisdom and 'knowledge
necessary for a perfect ono
hippy life.
But, last year near. the.end
of June when I began to
grasp that My high school
da4s were over, I had none of
those feelings. I felt instead
that after five years I still
knew ever so little and
perhaps that is how I will.
always feel, and yet iii'
looking back through some,
gradenine texts I wonder
how I could have struggled
so over the material in them.
Another trick of time I
suppose comes as each new
fact is added to one's
memory, it builds 'up like a
rung in a ladder. In looking
back; the first rungs having
faded from view now look
very close together and one
does not appreciate the efa
fort required in climbing
them.
In the same way those next
few steps seem in-
surmountable because of
their proximity. If only,we
could get off the ladder of
time and see things as they
are instead of as how they
appear to be. -
But the clock that kept us
in these classrooms on
Friday afternoons now, too, -
holds us fast. The learning
process, however is not
time's only fool. Time also
plays the same tricks with
our lives. ,

them in the four years before
that is misty or stuck
together like the pages of a
book. In looking back 1 can't
imagine that some of !Ay
friends ever looked like their

yearbook.
The.incidents which made
aur years here so enjoyable
also seem pasted together
like pages. For an instantwe
can pry these pages apart
and get a glimpse of people
with the same names as
purs,.but we can't hold these
pages apart indefinitely
This is good .in that it
forces us to go on, to keep on
living:-! ices us to -live for
each day -making new
decisions and doing new
things with both old and new
friends. Each of these new
decisions will take us along
new paths that will cross now
and again.
Those decisions we. make
now and have shade in the
