Firemen aren't paramedics
At Hensall council Mon-
day.. a copy of a, tetter was
received from a local resi-
dent to Jim -Hyde. the
village tire chief, asking
about the operation of the
department's oxygen -equip-
ment.
Reeve Harold Knight said -
as far as he knew there was
no one on the .fire depart-
ment qualified to operate
the oxygen equipment and
tie said the firemen are
"volunteers and don't want
the responsibility.”
The reeve said the fire
department are not a
paramedic snit. but a
volunteer fire department.
He said in instances of
medical emergency ilequir-
ing oxygen. residents of ;
Hensall should call a doctor
or the hospital, and not
tire local'fire department.
The reeve said the
firemen carry Scott air
packs to handle smoke in-
halation situations they-
might
hey
might, encounter in
firefighting. but in other
emergeneis,'citiens would
be better to take the person
involved directly to the
hospital or phone the Zurich
ambulance since the
response time involved
would likely be shorter.
Council was also informed
that the cost of undertaking
a study of the village water
works would be $3.800 to $4•-
500. The study would provide
background information for
annexation hearings and
serve as a planning tool for
future development in the
village. -
Council had offered to.pay
half the costs of the study if
- A: and G. Iieid. who.had_ap-
_proaciied council about -
building a subdivision in the
village. would pay the other
half of the costs.
Clerk Betty Oke reported
she hadn't received any cor;
respondence from the
developers on the cost shar-
ing proposal made by coun-
cil.
t
peeve Knight said there
were rumours that the Reid
property might be sold as an
industrial site to an'
American -based company.
He said there would be
nothing in tfie=:county's plan
to prevent an agricultural -
based 'company buying
agricultural land.
The reeve said even if the
Reid property wasn't sub-
divided, this .doesn't
necessarily mean council
would have to stop annexa-
tion ,plans. Reeve Knight
said. "I think we really need
some building lots lin the
village."
Council members also
voted to implement a
reserve fund for park im-
provement adjacent to the
new Hensall and" 13isfrich
Community Centre.
A surplus of $8.000
resulted when the village
for the parks and recreation
board.
The money in the reserve
fund will be used to
purchase lights for the ball
diamond and for landscap-
ing or else installing tennis
