FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Time
flies
ei t;;;,;.\,••_.
While it seems summer is just beginning, time is really
flying. Received a call this week from George Tieman tell-
ing us about the 1975 Freidsburg celebrations planned for
his town.
George told us that two of the popular events would be
back on the sports program. Friedsburg activities are being
confined to one day this year, Saturday, August 2.
Tug-of-war competitions will again be featured. By way
of the grapevine we hear two area teams have been holding
secret workouts. Both are ex -champions and want to get
back in their winning ways. They are the boys from Shipka
and Mt. Carmel.
Arm wrestling for men has proved popular over the last
couple of years and officials are toying with the idea of ex-
tending this event to include a class for ladies.
With 1975 being Women's Year across Canada. this
appears to be a good idea. And why not?
So remember, Saturday, August 2 is the big day in
Dashwood. You have about six weeks to get into condition
for the various athletic events.
The parade this year which will be held at 3 p.m. on the
Saturday is expected to be bigger and better than ever.
Over the last couple of years a good portion of the profits
from Friedsburg Days have been donated to Western On-
tario Shrine clubs.
To show their appreciation, a large number of Shriners
are expected to join the parade with numerous floats.
A new event
Officials of the Exeter Agricultural Society have
completed plans to hold a tractor pull at the local
fairgrounds this summer.
Fair board president Bruce Shapton tells us the date of
Sunday afternoon, August 10 has been confirmed.
We were at last week's RAP meeting when Shapton
received permission to have the event held on the track in
front of the grandstand at the fair grounds.
He showed slides of a similar event in Texas and said
tractor pulls in Western Ontario are becoming more pop-
ular. In recent years they have been staged in Teeswater,
Lucknow, Seaforth, Listowel and Kirkton.
The events are sanctioned by the Western Ontario Trac-
tor Pullers Association. Any area farmers wishing to test
the strength and power of their tractors will be eligible for
some of the competitions. Several classes will be for
modified machines.
Watching the mail
Most elementary school students in this area will be
watching their mail boxes fairly carefully for the next cou-
ple of weeks. About 60 balloons were sent up recently
heralding the upcoming Canada Week celebrations in Ex-
eter.
Each balloon carried a number of cards with names of
school students attached. The finders are being asked to
return the cards before July 2. Senders of the balloons
travelling the farthest distance will receive prizes.
We watched as 18 balloons took off from the Exeter
public school grounds a week ago Tuesday afternoon and
the way they took off with a strong east wind behind them it
wouldn't surprise us if they travel quite a distance.
Similarly those launched at the three other schools
Thursday headed east. We hear of a report recently where a
balloon sent up in Mitchell landed in Newfoundland and that
isn't a Newfie joke.
The balloons released locally were of heavy quality, of
large size and filled with helium and should go a long dis-
tance. So, residents, east and west in Canada and the United
States may get some advance publicity on our Canada Week
plans.
Dorothy Balsdon and Gay Lemmond and other
members of the Alpha Pi Sorority are to be congratulated
for their enthusiasm in sponsoring a Canada Week garden
contest with the co-operation of the three florists in town.
The winners of the best and most improved gardens and
lawns will receive a Green Thumb award. With all the rain
we have had lately maybe it should be a Muddy Thumb
prize.
The talent show sponsored by the Exeter Fair Board to
be held on Saturday night, June 28 will give musicians and
performers of all kinds a chance to display their talents.
Fair board president Bruce Shapton asked us to
emphasize that this is not a contest but just a talent night.
Plans are being formulated for a talent contest to be held
during the fall fair in September
Playground registration low
Saturday's registration session for the 1975 Exeter
summer playground program brought out a smaller
number of youngsters than officials hoped for.
Rec director Jim McKinlay said close to 50 signed up
Saturday but he had hoped for close to 100.
McKinlay said he met with RAP and playground people
Sunday afternoon and a change was made in the scheduling
and cost structure.
Instead of operating an eight week program it will be
split into two sessions of four weeks. The cost will be split
to $5 for each of the two sessions.
This will allow any youngsters planning to be away on
holidays to take part for four weeks for the lesser charge.
McKinlay said he had received some objections to the $10
charge but pointed out over eight weeks it only amounted to
25 cents per day.
McKinlay said he realizes playground costs along with
swimming lessons for a family of three children could be
rather tough economically.
Members of the playground staff will be visiting the
two elementary schools in town this week to explain the
playground program.
The rec director suggested the playground program
provides an important part of a child's growing up. They
learn how to get along with other youngsters and this is im-
portant in the process of building character for the future.
Swimming registration was a different story with 460
youngsters and 25 adults signing up for lessons.
Attendance at the regular roller skating sessions at the
Exeter arena has been encouraging. Thursday night of last
week, about 160 youngsters turned out.
Crowds should increase a bit when classes at the two
elementary schools are completed for the year allowing the
younger boys and girls to participate.
