FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Give Canada
'a hug'
It's now official. Exeter will be having Canada Week
celebrations giving an of us a chance to do as the govern-
ment provided posters and stickers saying, "Give Canada a
hug "
Full credit should go to rec director Jim McKinlay and
RAP's program planner Ruth Durand in showing enough in-
itiative and endurance in getting the project started.
McKinlay in making preliminary plans said he heard
lots of people say, "it won't work, People around here won't
do anything unless they are paid for it."
We have attended both meetings held to date on plan-
ning the Canada Week celebrations and the interest and
enthusiasm has certainly been very high. Most of the ser-
vice. volunteer and school groups in Exeter have indicated
they are willing to help.
The local recognition of Canada's birthday will definite-
ly be lower key than the Centennial celebrations a couple of
years ago but It will show that we are all proud to be
Canadians.
The committee several times discussed the possibility
of having a flag parade but finally decided against it and
will be asking all residents to participate by simply flying a
flag regardless of size.
Area elementary school children are being given an
early chance to participate by launching balloons. By the
time this issue is printed we hope the 54 balloons are already
heading upwards and outwards to unknown destinations.
One balloon is being sent up for each classroom in Ex-
eter public, Precious Blood separate and Usborne. McCur-
dy and Stephen schools.
The balloons are quite large being three feet by three
feet and will be filled with helium. Ruth Durand said at the
latest meeting that donations would be gratefully accepted
from any Exeter and area merchants to defray expenses of
this pre -publicity event.
The official opening of Canada Week activities will be
on Friday. June 27 with a proclamation from town council
and a community dance at the arena with popular Joe
Overholt supplying the music.
Many interesting events are planned for the next four
days. Included will be the opening of the new tennis courts
being constructed by the Exeter Lions club. Saturday after-
noon.
Sunday's program wil involve around a community pic-
nic. barbecue and games at Riverview park. Later in the
evening the South Huron Ministerial Association is planning
a community worship service.
Monday. the annual tournament for the Exeter Centen-
nial soccer cup will be held and Tuesday, challenge softball
games will be played and the five days of activities will con-
clude with an Open House at the R. E. Pooley branch of the
Royal Canadian Legion.
Several other events will be interspersed throughout
the five days. Members of the Alpha Pi Sorority are
organizing a garden and lawn competition with prizes going
to the person showing the best and the most improved
Green Thumb.
Exeter Fair Board president Bruce Shapton is hurried-
ly attempting to organize an amateur talent show to be held
on the Saturday evening and a lawn bowling jitney is also
possible.
The talent show will be open to anyone wishing to per-
form and a spot on the program may be assured by calling
Bruce Shapton or Jerry MacLean.
'All in all it looks like an interesting Canada Week
program which should give everyone regardless of age a
chance to participate arid "Give Canada a Hug" at the same
time.
More Tennis Facilities
While the new Exeter tennis courts will not be open for
three more weeks a similar facility is open for business at
Vanastra the former CFB Clinton.
The Clinton tennis facility includes six full sized courts
with a ten foot high fence so that players are not required to
chase stray balls.
The gates remain locked but upon payment of
membership fees, players receive the combination to enter
the tennis courts at any time they desire.
Beginning June 12 and for the next three Thursdays,
Ken Clynick of Clinton will be providing instruction to
anyone needing any assistance.
Possible Rivalry
With the recent disbanding of the Exeter Expos
intermediate baseball team a new rivalry could be shaping
up between Dashwood and Arva.
At least three players from Exeter have joined the two
other clubs in the Huron -Perth league. Perry Stover, Randy
Tieman and Dave Parsons are now members of the
Dashwood Tigers and Terry Bourne, Brian Haskett and
Greg Revington of last year's Expos are now with Arva.
The Dashwood club was also strengthened last week
with the return of John Hayter who was one of the classiest
shortstops in the Senior Intercounty last year with Strat-
ford.
Hayter's fine fielding and strong batting will help the
Tigers immensely.
A lower key league
It's encouraging to hear of some of the regulations of
the newly organized Exeter and district men's rec softball
league.
In the list of player eligibilities rec director Jim
McKinlay says, "the league is open to all males within the
South Huron area who are interested in playing softball for
the fun of it."
To give every player a fair chance to see action, a rule
stipulates that any player who shows up for a game must
play at least two innings.
This move to get every player into the game is ex-
cellent and should shift the emphasis of the sport a bit more
to participation than winning.
Crediton juveniles lose
The Crediton juveniles dropped
their first game of the Western
Ontario Athletic Association
season when they visited Kin-
cardine Sunday afternoon.
Kincardine pitcher Mike Petter
allowed only four hits and fanned
21 Crediton batters,as his club
waltzed to an 8-1 victory.
The Kincardine club scored one
run in the third, four- in the fifth
and three more in the seventh
and Crediton's only marker came
in the sixth frame.
Kevin Bestard opened the
Crediton sixth with a single,
moved to second on a walk to
Paul Truemner and home on
another single from the bat of
Larry Clarke.
Larry Clarke went the distance
on the Crediton mound. He gave
up a half dozen hits and picked up
tight strikeouts.
