The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1975-05-01, Page 11 (2)• It's a big bit of a problem, ladies,
when the nice fashions don't fit you
Spring is the time for fashion
shows. That makes some women
very happy. It makes others very
frustrated.
What could be more frustrating
than seeing a dress being
modelled that you know you are
too fat to get into?
That is the complaint of many
women. But some are trying to do
something about it. At a recent
meeting of the Exeter TOPS club,
the group, as a whole, was asked
about weight reduction.
They said they wanted to be
able to buy or sew a dress without its own. The group agreed that if

But, according to club president members of the group said when
Willie Yule, the group is holding they find they have gained
weight, they eat more to build up
their injured ego. "You feel
disgusted with yourself," said
one member.
Asked it they inflicted punish-
ments on themselves when they
did gain weight, one said,
"gaining is the punishment."
All agreed the results of weight
reduction are worth special ef-
forts.
Some of the members were
prodded on to lose weight by their
children. Some indicated their
children were embarrassed to
have an overweight mother.
Others found that things they
would hear on the street from
kids would make them want to
lose weight. But they also said
their children encourage them to
lose.
There is another problem of
weight reduction, more of a
personal nature. They said when
the body loses weight, it will
reach a plateau, and stay at that
weight. The group said after they
had been geared to lose so much
weight per week, it was very
discouraging when they could not
lose any more.
There is also a happy medium
for a person's weight, they said.
They claim some look sick when
they are too thin.

The key to weight control and
reduction is moderation in all
things. However, there was some
information brought forward that
could be discouraging for some.
Ancestry plays an important
part in what a person is. Most of
the members, agreed that if their
ancestors were overweight so
would their children. They also
said there is more leisure time
now, so that gives more time to
think about the problems of being
overweight.
They also noted several
changes in varieties of foods
then, compared to now. They said
that people may have had more
food then, but .it may not have
been as healthy for them.
Unlike some of the other weight
reduction clubs, TOPS is the only
one that consults with doctors,
said the group. They said in some
other clubs, members lose so
much weight they get sick and
are forced to go to a doctor.
The group sees they have a
problem. They call themselves
food-aholics. They said their club
is much like Alcoholics
Anonymous. They inspire each
other tp lose weight. They also
have contests which they say are
helpful.
The Exeter TOPS Club has a
membership of 17 and meet each
Tuesday at 8:30 in the Auxiliary
room at the Legion.
