Jim Wallace of Crediton was in the sulky Monday night at Western Fair Raceway in London when Perfect Jackie was first across the finish line in the eighth race. Perfect Jackie, a four year old mare was acquired only recently by Jack Darling of Exeter from Al Morgan of Sebringville and made her start for her new owner a winning one. Wallace was the leading driver at Sudbury Downs in the summer and winter meets running from June 2 to February 15. He drove 43 winners, placed second 33 tinges and was in the show position on 31 occasions. The win with Perfect Jackie Monday night was the 13th for Wallace at the London winter meeting which ended last night, Wednesday. Racing resumes at the popular London track on May 16 with races set for every night of the week except Tuesdays and Sunda s. Two of the 13 victories at London in recent weeks came with Northco Deb, owned by Danny Calcott of Centralia. Wallace currently has 12 horses in his stable based at Western Fair and is also catch driving for many area owners. One of the favorites among the dozen Wallace trained horses is Tar Sahbra, presently competing in the S8.000 to $10,000 claiming events. Tar Sahbra is the only one actually owned by Wallace. He will he taking Dusty's Camp, owned by Bob Pooley of Exeter to the London track this weekend in preparation for the summer meet. The local trainer -driver says he will not be returning to Sudbury to defend his driving cham- pionship. He continued, "I have too many stake colts in Western Ontario. I have three which are entered in most of the staked events in Ontario this summer. One of the three stake eligible colts is three year-old Dee G River owned by Hans and Helen Bischoff of Exeter. Dee G River will race in a provincial race at Barrie on May 19. The other Wallace trained stake possibilities are owned by Dr. W. D. O'Connor of Grand Bend and Harvey Eagleson, Greenway. Both colts are currently stabled at Eagleson's farm and will be heading for the London track in the near future. While racking up 43 victories in Sudbury, Wallace won eight straight races with Gary's Joanne for owner Alex McDougall of London. Others winning at Sudbury Downs were Bob Pooley's Dusty Camp and Kathy Camp, owned by Ed Hunter-Duvar, also of Exeter. Wallace who only started driving at the London track in February with his own horses and catch driving for area owners has now moved into sixth position in the driving com- petitions. In referring to his public stable at Western, Wallace told the T -A, "With a tremendous increase in the price of feed, harness racing is becoming an expensive hob- by" He charges an owner $280 per month to house, feed and train an animal. In addition the owner is responsible for costs of veterinarians and shoeing. Vet bills for Wallace's 12 horse stable are about 8300 per month. Good hay now costs 81.60 per bale and straw is about 81 per bale. These prices are about double of a year ago. One trainer, Arnold Frech of Sault St. Marie and two girl grooms from the London area make up the Wallace stable staff. In talking about the girls, Wallace commented, "girls are better grooms then men. They keep things really spotless. I guess you would say they are better housekeepers." The girls each work about nine hours per day and are required to be on duty when ever any of their horses race.
