Jets take over first place,
face Perths in crucial test
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets en-
joyed a very successful week and
moved into first place in the
Ontario Hockey Association
Senior Continental league
standings.
This week, the Jets downed the
Woodstock Royals 5-3 and 6-5 and
the London Kings 7-5 before
bowing 7-3 Tuesday night to the
Stratford Perths. -'
The' Jets lead the league wit 28
points, the Stratford club is only
one point back and the London
Kings follow in third place with 24
points.
The Ilderton arena will be the
scene Friday night for a very
crucial game as the Jets play
host to Stratford. Sunday af-
ternoon the L-1 club travels to
New Hamburg to meet the
Screaming Eagles.
In Stratford Tuesday night,
four third period goals by the
Perths decided the issue. Barry
Baynham, Larry Haugh and
Jamie Robb were the marksmen
for the Jets.
Come from behind
In the Jets 5-3 win over
Woodstock Sundaythey were
• forced to overcome a 3-0
Woodstock lead which held to
near the end of the second period.
Tom Murphy, Dan Pringle and
Don McPhee counted for the
Royals before Jack Nairn ended
the famine for Lucan-Ilderton at
17:46 of the middle frame when
he scored on a scramble around
the net.. Don Carter and Dick
Doughty assisted..

The Jets wasted little time in
getting into scoring gear in the
final session. Jim Blake cut the
deficit to a single goal at 1:10
when he found the range with a
backhand shot with the assist
going to Barry Baynham. -
Jamie Robb's slap shot from 30
feet out on the left wing knotted
the score at 3:36 on a play set up
by Bill Fairbairn and Jim Blake.
Blake was right back to score
the insurance goal near the eight
minute mark converting passes
from Jacques Cousineau and
Jamie Robb.
At the midway point of the
period Robb completed the
scoring with another blazing slap
shot that grazed the goal post and
Atoms lose
The Exeter atom "B" hockey
team dropped a 5-1 decision to
Ilderton Tuesday night in.
S11 smrock league action.
The only Exeter marker came
from the stick of Graham
Solomon on a pass from Trevor
Boyle in the third period.

To start the third period coach
Jack Nairn reunited the line of
Blake, Fairbairn and Cousineau
and they responded with a goal on
each of their first four ap-
pearances on the ice.
Erase another deficit
The early situation in the 6-5
Friday win in Woodstock was
similar for the Jets as they were
forced to work back from a 2-0
deficit midway •through the
second period.
Don McPhee and Wayne
Fenlon were the early scorers for
Woodstock. Rick Fifield broke
the Jets scoring famine with a
successful shot at 8:30 of the
middle frame as he converted
passes from Terry Johnson and
Don Carter.
At the 9:55 mark, Jim Blake
tied the score with assists going
to Larry -Haugh and Steve
Proctor. Before the period was
• over veteran Doug Galloway hit
the mark on a play started by
Rick Fifield and Larry Haugh.
In the third period, Rick'
Fifield, Don Carter and Rick
Campbell were the L-1
marksmen. Fifield counted from
Don Carter and Barry Baynham,
Campbell registered with help
from Terry Johnson and Jim
Blake and Carter tipped in a shot
by Jeff Craig. Fifield also
assisted.
Other scorers -Tor Woodstock
were Dan Pringle. Mike Embro
aid Tom Murphy.
Ken Kitching, formerly of' the
Stratford Perths was a standout"
in goal for Woodstock facitjg a
total of 55 shots. They R6yals
fired 43 shots at Lorne Daer in
goal for the Jets.
The fifth Woodstock score
came with six attackers on ttfe
ice and the net empty with 44
seconds remaining.
The sensationa efforts of
Sonny Pennington in e Jets net
was the big reason the were able
to score Thursday's 5 win in
Lambeth over the Lond Kings.
Pennington turned aw 36
London shots and was able to
stymie- three clear cut
breakaways by the Kings.
Most of the scoring again took
place injhe third period. The Jets
led 2-1 at the end of the first
period and London added the only
goal of the middle frame.
At 5:13 of the. opening session
Harold White put the Kings into a
temporary lead. A pair of power
play goals near the midway mark
put the Jets ahead.
' Jim Blake scored on a rebound
with passing help from Bill
Fairbairn and Terry Johnson
and Dick Doughty counted on a
pass from Doug Galloway.
Jim Keon with the first of two
scores evened the count in the
second.
Each team scored twice in the
first half of the third period to
keep the score even. Rick Fifield
was the first L-1 marksman with
help from Barry Baynham and
Dick Doughty. The next three
goals came with the opposition
short handed.
Jim Keon and Al Johnson hit
the mark for the Kings and Jim
Blake was successful with the
assist going to Jacques
Cousineau.
At 12:42 Cousineau put the Jets
in front 5-4 finishing off a play
with Jim Blake and Terry
Johnson and Don Carter fired
what proved to be the winner at
17:06 on a pass from Bill Fair-
bairn.
Blake scored from a scramble
around the London net with less
than three minutes remaining.
Campbell and Cousineau
assisted. High Smibert scored the
fifth and last London goal at
:42.

Win twice elsewhere
Bantams lose inSilver Stick
The Exeter bantams came up
with two victories in three starts
this week. Friday on home ice,
they blanked Clinton 5-0;
Saturday it was an easy 8-2 win
over Byron and Sunday in Silver
Stick competition In Watford, the
locals succumbed 8-2 to Essex.
In Silver Stick play, the Exeter
club was outskated and
outhustled by Essex club and
failed to muster much of a
scoring threat.
The first Exeter goal came at
9:22 of the second period from
Dave Atthill on a pass from Brian
Mercer. Mercer was the second
goal getter on a three-way effort
with Perry Pooley and Dave
Bogart late in the game.
Against Byron, the locals held a
6-1 lead at the end of the first
period and were never seriously
threatened. Brian Mercer was

in Rec play
Two close games resulted in
Thursday's Exeter and district
doubleheader at the Exeter
arena. Les Pines edged the North
Stars 10-8 and Newby Tire
downed Usborne township by a
score of 7-4.
Tonight Thursday. North Star
and Usborne meet at 8 p.m. and
Newby Tire and Les Pines tangle
at 9:30 p.m.
Paul Mason scored three times
to lead the Les Pines scoring
attack. Next in line with two
goals each were Bob. Rowe, Scott
Burton orad Bill Van Bergen.
Notching a single was Ian
McCallum.
Ron Harvey picked up a hat
trick to pace the North Stars.
Chris Daniels and Larry Brint-
nell scored two goals apiece and
Pat Zudnick scored once.
Dale Skinner and Bob Jones,
fired two 'successful shots each
for Newby Tire. Getting one goal
each were Tom Watt,- Bob
MacDonald and Paul Kerslake.
Scoring in single fashion for
Usborne were Tim Ross, Ralph
Batten. Mark Hearn and Ron
Dougall. '
Broncos get
'one victory
The Exeter Broncos gained an
even split in two atom division
games over the past week.
Saturday, the Broncos lost a 5-2
decision to St. Marys and Sunday
they were able to conte up with a
3-1 victory;„Byer Lambeth.
A goal in each period allowed
the Broncos to win over Lambeth.
John Ker nick's first period goal
came on an unassisted effort. •
In the middle frame, Mark
Vandergunst completed a three-
way effort with David Under-
wood and David Shaw and Shaw
counted in the third with passing
help from Underwood and Scott
Batten.
Against St. Marys. David Shaw
scored for the Exeter club on a
penalty shot and Scott Batten
converted a pass from Mike
Clark.
the only Exeter performer to
scpre two goals. Marking in
single fashion were Steve
Skinner, Randy Parsons, Brad
Taylor, Darrell Preszcator and
Dave Bogart.
The goal by Paul Van Gerwen
came with his club playing two
men short. He stole the puck
inside the circle and moved in on
goal and scored.

while Dennits Presscater, Ste
Skinner and Dave Bogart he
on one goal each. •
Against Clinton, Randy Par-
sons was • the top Exeter
marksman with two goals with
Dan Bell assisting on each.
