win 1988 Lucan Cup
LUCAN - The Oshawa Red
Wings defeated the Brooklin Flyers
4-3 to win the ninth annual Lucan
Cup championship on Sunday.
16 teams from across Ontario and
Michigan were.vying for the cham-
pionship and the $4,000 top prize
money that goes along with it.
In the first round pf the double
knockout, round-robin tournament,
Producto Chemicals beat Blair's
Sport from Fort Erie 5-1, Brooklin
beat Dresden Dukes 3-1, Dale's
Graphics, from ,Michigan beat
Cambridge Hornets ' 5-4. Doug
Crossman's Hockey School, from
London, beat Guelph P.P.C. 4-2,
Oshawa beat Lucan 8-1. Cam Doig
scored the only goal for Lucan. Au-
rora Saints beat. Allied Detroit 3-1,
Windsor AA beat Kitchener Moose
Lodge 5-1, and London edged Wel-
. ligcl 7-6.
In the second round on the win-
ner's side, Brooklin beat Producto
6-4, -Dale's beat Crossman's 5-2,
Oshawa beat Aurora 7-5 and Wind-
sor beat London 6-1.
In the second round on the loser's
side, Dresden eliminated Fort Eric
3-2, Cambridge beat Guelph 5-2,
Lucan eliminated Allied 3-2, get-
ting.goals from Brian Mercer, Paul
Wraith and Doug Latta, and Wel-
land eliminated Kitchener 4-3.
• In the B semi finals, Cambridge
eliminated 'Dresden 6-4 and Wel-
land, the defending champs, elimi-
nated the locals 6-2. Jamie Shipley
and Jeff Shipley scored for Lucan.
Then in the A semi finals,
Oshawa defeated Windsor.5-4 and
Brooklin beat Dale's 5-1.
Welland took the Village of Lu -
can trophy and S1,000 as the B
winners, defeating Cambridge 5-1 .•
and Oshawa beat Brooklin 4-3 to
win the championship.
Brooklin took home $1,500 for
their troubles, finishing as runners-

.Organizers of the cup said there
were very happy with the • way
things turned out this year and said
the hockey wasvery exciting and
all players and fans seemed to have
a good time. The biggest problem '
was finding 16 teams willing lo.

nament, which is by invitation
only.

ment took place on_ the weekend, and Oshawa took the $4,000 first -

Mini Hawks keep. unbeaten
HURON PARK - The Stephen
'Township Mini Black Hawk Atoms
kept their unbeaten streak in tact by
winning two more games last
week.
They doubled Clinton 4-2 at the
Stephen Township Arena on Thurs-
day and on Saturday thcy got past
St. Marys 5-4 in an exhibition
game played at St. Marys, to im-
prove their overall record to 6-0-3.
Clinton's Jason Hepel opened the
scoring with four seconds left in the
opening period, but both teams had
several good scoring opportunities.
Billy Connor tied the game for
the winners in the second_ at 3:41.
Pres Lavier got his first of three to
put Black Hawks out in front for
good just under a minute later. La -
vier scored again at 5:55 to make it
3-1 with Brian Jesney picking up
assists.
The teams traded goals in the final
period with Lavier completing his
hat trick for the home team, with
Connor getting the lone assist. _
Billy Connor was the winning
goalie.
St. Marys spotted Stephen a 2-0
lead by allowing them to score
twice in the first period before com-
ing to .life in the third, getting all
four of their goals but falling one
streak
short.
. Scoring for Stephen in the first
were, Tim Morgan at 5:59 from
Nick Parsons, and Lavier with 25
seconds left.
The second period was scoreless,
- but in the third St, Marys came out
flying scoring three times in the
first three minutes.
Stephen tied it on Ken Desjar-
dine's goal from Andy and Chris
Glavin, but- shortly thereafter St.
Marys went ahead 4-3.
Stephen fought back to tied it one
Lavier's goal from Parsons and
Brian Dallas and came back to get
the winner with 1:54 left.

EXETER - Exeter Kinsmen Gen-
erals downed Tavistock 3-2 in over-
time on Sunday to win the Conso-
lation B final in Wingham in the
Regional .Midget Silver Stick tour-
- nament on the weekend.
Mark Burton scored on an assist
by Todd McCann in the first min-
ute of overtime to _win it for the !o-
rals -
A third -period goal by Laurie
Chalmer has tied the game for' Exet-
er. Harlon Tinney scored the other
goal, while Jamie Tomes and Brett
Borden drew assist.
The Generals defeated Walkerton
6-5 in the semi-final after losing a
5=3 encounter to Kincardine- in the
opening game.
In league play the Generals con -
win in a thriller on Wednesday
night at home against Strathroy. .
Exeter built a 2-1 first load
on goals by John Bell and Brett

Panthers at Mundi tournament

EXETER - South Huron District
High School Senior boys basketball
team attended the Regina Mundi In-
vitational basketball tournament on
the weekend.
The Panthers defeated the St. Jo-
seph Rams on Friday night to ad-
vance to the semi-final game on
Saturday against East Elgin.
The Panthers played well on Fri-
day against the Rams. SH led by a
light 26-23 margin at halftime and
took charge in the second half to
take the 44-38 victory.

EXETER - The Bell Atoms

On Friday, they banged in six un-

' he Exeter team ran out of time
..nexpcctedly in their bid to catch up
to Forest. Thebuzzer went out with
over six minutes still showing on
the clock due to prior commitments
for ice time.
Ryan Soldan opened the scoring
on a set up from Ryan Beckett.
Matt Sims who was playing out in-
stead of in goal passed to Ryan
Beckett who knocked home Exeter's
second marker.

Hensall Tykes win 9-0
HENSALL - Hensall Tyke beat
Blyth 9-0 in a game last week. Jeff
Campbell scored his 37th goal in
four gamesby scoring all nine
goals.
Another shut out for Jeremy Wil-
lert. •
Hensall Novice played Goderich Il
and won 9-1 on Sunday in Gode-
rich. Singles were added by Regan
Neilands, Brock Wiess, Mark Bell,
Jim Seaton, Ryan Munn. Goal-
tending duties where shared by Eric
Groot and Jeff Rathwefl.
Hensall Atoms won three games
in past week giving them a perfect
6-0 record so far this season.
Last Wednesday, they beat Clin-
ton 10-0. Dan Taylor picked up
five points .with two goals and three
assists. He was followed by Jason
Campbell with four points (one
goal and three assists), Mark Bell

and Chris Donahue added 10 each
with singles , by Brad Hartman,
Chris Taylor and Ray Bcirling.
The shutout by Lance Wiess.
Saturday morning Hensall beat
Bayfield 9-0. Lance Wiess picked
up his second shutout of the week.
Greg Keys scored two goals includ-
ing the winner. Mark Bell on loan
from the Novice team, also had two
goats, followed- by singles from
Blair Moir, Dan Taylor, Ray Bcir-
ling, Chris Donahue and Chris Tay-
lor.
Saturday afternoon Hensall beat
Exeter Bells 5-2 in an exhibition
match. Dcfenceman Blair Moir led
the scoring with two goals followed
by singles from Dan Taylor, Jeff
Moir and Ray Bcirling. Ryan,
(manse picked up three assists.
Chris Donahue came up with
some great save in net.
Pee Wees riding roller coaster
FOREST- The Exeter Pee Wee
Legion team proved this week they
are capable of .playing extremely
good, as well as'extremely bad.
In Forest Sunday the team put it
all together as they defeated their
opponents 7-3. Good defensive
play made the goaltending duties
easier for Jason Clay.
• Ryan Stuart led the scoring for
Exeter, banging home two goals
with wicked slapshots from. the
blucline. Other goals were scored
by, Jeff Lingard, Derek Beckett,
Scan McCann, Steve Farquhar and "
Derek Campbell.
Strathroy 7 - Exeter 0
The other side of the Exeter team
showed up last Wednesday as they
were blanked at home 7-0 by
Strathroy.
Goaltender Darren Kints"had little
support as Strathroy seemed to do
whatever they wanted to. Exeter -
had several good scoring opportuni-
ties but were robbed by Strathroy's
goalie Stapleton.
