Thadiflohawks edged the Harriston Blues 3-2 at the South Huron Rec Centre -Friday night, despite out - shooting them 36-17 over 60 min utes and dominating; most of the • play. The Mohawks also defeated the Grand Valley I larvesters 9-3, in • Grand Valley Sunday night, to run their winning streak to six ga nes. The Mohawks have not lost since November 6 when they were beaten 7-6 by the Blues, in Harri'ton, and have won every game easily since . then except for Friday night. "Their goalie (Steve Lantz) came up.very big for them and kept them in the garlic," said Mohawks coach Cord Brooks. "We had a few mental lapses ansl look too many dumb penalties," he added. Brooks said the game plan was to bump and grind w ith the Blues as much as possible but we he died that for the first period and the Blues did what they did in the second period. The third period was a case of the • Mohawks hanging On for the win. This was the first close game for .the Mohawks since.• losing and . Brooks said he wasn't sure how the players would react. "1 think. the pressure started to show a little bit because it was so Close and I think that is why we took so many stupid penalties but we played well enough to have won easily,' said Brooks. Mohawks outshot Harriston 16-3 in thc opening period and 11-5 in the second period and were only leading 2-1 heading in the final 20 minutes. Ron Goodhand opened the scoring for the Mohawks at 9:09 of the first period after being set up by Mark Sochner and Jeff Shipley, while en- joying a power play. John Kenrick, who hadn't played since the Toss in Harriston because of a twisted ankle, made it 2 -0,a1 - most two minutes later, with Joe Scherer picking up the assist. Mohawks had several goad sem- ing.chanccs in the first and second • period but couldn't get another past' Lantz in net for Harriston. The. Blues pulled to within one whena Dan Hill blasted slap shot past Rick Pikul, while on the pow- er play, with Kevin Konnings and Kerry Barber assisting. Harriston•had several good chanc- es to tic. the score in the third be- cause of several Exeter penalties, including two glorious chances with just over two minutes left but Pikul was equal to the task. Wednesday night the Hawks flew into Lucan riding a two -game win- ning streak and defeated the first - place Irish 4-3 and they beat the sec- ond -place Mitchell Hawks by the same score at the South Huron Rec Centre Sunday night. "Things are really coming togeth- er for us," said Hawk -coach Jack Nairn. "We are playing well togeth- er and accomplishing our goal of keeping the goals against down. I knew we would be successful if we could do that." Nairn said he was not very happy orts. with the officiating in Lucan. "I thought it was just terrible. I know it was his first game but four some of those guys were going out there to hurt our guys and we wer- en't getting calls we should have," said Naim. - The Hawks took a 3-1- lead after the opening 20 minutes and were able to hang on for the 4-3 win.
