Times-Advocate, 1988-11-23, Page 18Page 2A Times -Advocate, November 23, 1988 Basketball camp for kids at SHDHS By Michelle Ellison EXETER - E eery Wednesday. night, South Huron District High School scouts for future talent at their grade -school basketball clinic. Terry O'Rourke, a basketball coach at South Huron, established the ten - week clinic, five years ago mainly for fun, but. also to make upcoming students aware of the..basketball pro- gram at South Huron and to give them an introduction to high school basketball. • . Almost 100 grade school students from surrounding school & partici- pate in the clinic. This is the sec- ond largest turnout the clinic has seen. - Twenty -senior boys and girls bas- . kethall players act as coaches. O'Rourke feels this is beneficial to both the. high school and grad! school students. The elementary students seem to relate very well with the senior stu- dents and.can. recognize the skills they have. developed while playing basketball at South Huron. As, coaches, the students develop leader- ship skills and gain responsibility. Dody Sweitzer, a grade 8 student at -1 Stephen Central School, feels, "the coaches arc awesome and really friendly". • The 90 -minutes clinic combines a 30 -minute instruction -session, which involves explanation of posi- tions and plays, with an hour of ac- tual court Umc. Obviously, with the large turn- out, the kids are enjoying them- selves. O'Rourke says -Chis is- the main objective and if any extremely talented basketball players conic out of it, that's a bonus. . Jason McBride had a four -point game to lead Exeter, (two goals and two assists). Mark Foster and Scott Parsons both had three point games,. both had one goal and two assists, •while.Greg Agnew had the other three points goal for Exeter and Jamie Rolph had the other assist. EXETER 9 iLDERTON 1 Ilderton tied the game at 1-1 with just eight seconds left in the first period, but that was as close as they could conte since Parsons gave Ex- ctcr the lead back with one second Iclt in the first and ncvcr looked hack. Parsons ended up with five goals on the day to lead Exeter, McBride netted a pair and Trevor Truemner and Shawn Webster each scored once. Truemner had five assists that game, Agnew and Foster each had three, Webster chipped in a pair and Parsons added one. • dent at Exeter Public School says she attends the clinic because. "1 like the people and I (earn how to Play basketball." Stacey Thurman, a grade 8 student also from Exeter Public School agrees as she claims, "1 come to learn things and have fun." ' With the small participation fee, each student receives his own T- shirt. Most valuable player awards. also provide incentins,.for the. players. A special "spirit" award is presented to the boy and girl who may not excel in technical skill but show the most enthusiasm and sportsmanship. This clinic is definitely a success. The students receive an early intro- duction to high gchool basketball in a fun way. Hopefully their experi- ence will encourage them to play Panther basketball.
