A small but apprecia- tive audience received several good ideas on reducing the amount of their garbage from Lois Hodgins' motto address "Waste not, want not". A nine -minute video on recy- cling, hosted by David Suzuki, 'showed the importance of recycling - as an environmentally sound meth- od of waste managcmcnt. Stephen Township's :recently re- elected reeve, Tom Tomes, a mem- ber of the Huron County Waste . Management Committee, traced the history of the handling of garbage in the township. lie noted that as the costs of operation increased, dumps became known as'landfill • sites. Over the years the Ministry has changed the regulations for the op- eration of a landfill site. Thcrc has to be enough land surrounding thc actual "dump" site to prevent the leaching of chemicals into streams 6r the water table. The presence of industries,. al- though adding to the tax coffers of thc township; has added to the prob- lems of waste disposal. The:cost of _operating the dump in 1971 was just over $4,000. In 1987 the township budget for waste manage- ment was $97,309, with $30,500 going into a reserve fund estab- lished in 1985. This reserve fund will help pay Stephen's share of the costs of the county master -plan. - An explanation of the Huron County Waste Management Master Plan was given by Joanne Richter, hired by the County in April. 1988. Joanne, a native of Prince George, B.C., with agcography degree from University of Victoria and a Mas- ter's degree in Planning from.Uni- versity of Waterloo, has the job of coordinating the public's participa- tion in the project. In order 10ac- quire new or expanded landfill sites the County must meet Ministry of the Environment regulations that a waste managcmcnt master plan be in place.
