Hydro failure reschedules
Music Canada concert at Bend
By Roberta v..,.._

GRAND BEND - The Grand Bend
Concert Association was faced with
the rescheduling of the proposed
November 16 concert, due to the are
wide blackout, which lasted -until 9
p.m. in Grand Bend. - . .
The young artists from Youth -and
Music Canada had to drive all the
way to Exeter for dinner, to find a
place with hydro: They 'spent the
night at Pinedale Inn, and gracious-
ly agreed to perform. on Thursday
evening, November 17. : -
The crowd was a bit smaller; due
to the change in date, but just as
enthusiastic, as President Nan
Freele introduced Duo Cameo
Gcrgely. Szokolay, a talented Hun-
garian -pianist accompanied Erik
Oland and Karina Gauvin as they
performed a selection of songs from
Handel- and Mozart.
They donned costumes for the oc-
casion, and made optimum use of
the tiny stage and aisles .to present
the story of a maid trying to persu-
ade hermaster to marry her. The
acting was delightful and the charac-
terizations of maid and master very
perceptive, sung in fine operatic
style. -Whether Gauvin and Oland
sang in French, German, Italian or
English, .the message of music
transcended the language to touch
the audience with jo
y.
One particular l4ighl,ight was a
sparkling duet from Mozart's Don
• Giovanni, where Don Juan success-
fully seduces a lady with his tender
song. After three rounds of ap-
plause, they provided an encore
from 'the "Magic Flute" by Mozart,
"En Popagasno", a real treat lir
music lovers.
A reception was held afterwards,
to 'provide the audience with a
chance of meet the performers, who
had an extra day to enjoy the Bend
area, courtesy of the blackout.
Don't forget the next concert, a
bonus performance by the Harbo=
raires, on November 30, also at the
United Church.
