Times-Advocate, 1988-11-16, Page 27MOHAWKS WIN BIG - The Exeter Mohawks won their weekend con- tests, rather easily. Sunday night they whipped Tavistock Royals 13-2 at the SHRC and Friday theyapeat the Shelburne Muskies in Shelburne 14-4. Here, Mark Soehner gets help from an unidentified teammate in keeping a Tavistock player pinned to the ice while play stayed in the Exeter end. McCann doesn't think ban will happen here EXETER - Tom McCann, presi- dent of the Exeter Minor Hockey Association, said he doubts if Onta- rio will follow in Quebec footsteps in recommendir • :hat minor hock- ey be banned for children under the age of 12. A report, published in Friday's London Free Press, said a task force just completed a seven-month study and will recommend that minor hockey should be banned in Novice and Atom Divisions because the pressure to win was just too much for pre teens. The report favors the introduction of hockey to physical education programs in the schools, so the kids can (earn the game informally and not .have to deal with "elitism of minor hockey programs." "I think that report was done for kids in some of the larger markets in Quebec, said McCann. "Some of those kids play 125 games a year with all their tournaments and our kids get to play in two tournaments out of the year, so I don't think it applies to us." "I think putting the learning in the schools could be disaster be- cause, 90 percent of the better kids will touch the puck while playing and the kids who want to learn will never see it. The bigger and better kids will still continue to dominate the game just like they do now," he said. "But I think that would not make that much difference as far as we are concerned because I don't think it will ever happen." McCann said if a kid is good enough at that age he should be playing the better brand of hockey anyway, so that his skills will properly develop. Gerard Grenier, coach of the Exet- e,: Novice Bombers hockey team, said, although he hadn't read the re- port, he also doesn't think putting Generals take 3 points in pair of weekend games EXETER - Exeter Generals took three out of four points in Sham- rock -midget action last week with a 5-1 win over Forest and a 4-4 tic with Lucan. Wednesday night at home, the Generals came from behind to gain the tic. Todd Hyde gave Lucan a 1- 0 lead in the first before Hcnri De- bruyn scored, assisted by Jeff Chip - chase. Before the first period was over, Steve Nixon scored again in the second, as Lucan had built a 3-1 head. Brett Borden scored, from Henri Debruyn early in the third. But Mike Demen answered again for Lucan. Goals by John Rooseboom GIC Rates for 35 Trust Companies 524.2773 10h14% 3-5 yrs mo. Auctioneers Norm Whiting Bob Heywood 235-1931 or 235-1964 235-0874 hockey in the schools is a good idea because he felt it would hinder a player's skill development. "Most kids on our team love playing hockey and nobody is forc- ing them to play. There is a certain amount of pressure on a player no matter what level you are playing, but t take it away from kids would be wrong," said Grenier. The reported stated that among the most prominent complaints were the early age at which players had to deal with the stress of orga- nized hockey, the excessive number of games and tournament, coaches who are too pre -occupied with win- ning, parents who apply too much pressure and the high cost of equip- ment.
