Farm tax rtbates
As mentioned in a previous column, due to an error in transferring
information from Ministry of Revenue to Ministry of Agriculture
and Food computers, Huron County residenrt,s received Farm Tax Re-
bate applications showing incorrect amounts. My Ministry has re-
cently sent letters to rebate recipients explaining the problem and
asking that you make a note on the application and return ir. Howev-
er, if you had already returned your application before receiving this
letter, the corrections will be made automatically in the Toronto of-
fice, and cheques will be issued for the correct amounts.
Government initiatives promote independence for
disabled persons
As further evidence of its commitment to helping individuals with
disabilities, the Ontario government has launched a series -of initia-
tives designe¢.to increase both independence and dignity.
For ordering a comprehensive review of educational opportunities
for hearing-impaired students; to exploring ways to improve deci-
sion-making for mentally incapable persons; the government is gon-
tinuing to improve the quality of life in Ontario. -
Independent living "the focus in report by Advisory
Council for Disabled Persons
Remo Mahcini, Minister Responsible for Disabled Persons, re-
cently tabled the thirteenth annual report for the Ontario Advisory
Council for Disabled Persons. -
"The focus of the Council's work this year, Mr. Mancini noted,
"was independent living, as reflected in the discussion paper 'Indepen-
dent Living - The Time is Now',"
The Councilpoints to the fact that the government has already tak-
en action on certain recommendations made in last year's position .
paper The Freedom to move is Life Itself. In August, Premier Pe-
terson announced increased funding for services to improve freedom
of mobility. -
In addition to reporting on key issues and, chievements of 1987/
88, the report also updates further developmt dts on projects reported
in the -previous year's' report.
Members of the Advisory Council are now -studying and research-
ing the
esearch-ing'the crucial topic of employment and disability, including skills
training and employment incentives.
Ontario to review education for" hearing-impaired
students
Education Chris. Ward has ordered the immediate start-up of a com-
prehensive review of educational programs for hearing-impaired stu-
dents.
This review covers the three schools operated by the Ministry in
Milton; London and Belleville, as well as a representative sample of
English- and French -language programs offered by individual public
and separate school boards. - -
The review will be conducted in two phases. The first phase; to
evaluate existing programs, will utilize an internal review committee
of educators of the deaf, _including representation from boards and the "
Ministry's provincial schools. The Minister of Colleges and Univer-
sities will also. take part, to examine educational opportunities for
the deaf at the post -secondary level. This phase is to be completed by
March 1989. -
The second phase, an external, independent review, will employ ed-
ucators and persons -with expertise in, but not employed in, the field
of deaf education in the jurisdictions undcr review. They will study
and validate the work of the internal review committee, formulate
conclusions, and provide -a final report by next year.
An advisory group of representatives from organizations within the
deaf and deaf education communities will provide ideas and -informa-
tion to the teams throughout the review. process: -
Education Minister Chris Ward said the committees' findings will
be used to improve deaf education, to provide the hest possible facili-
ties and programs for hearing impaired children in Ontario. -
