Mohawks roll along beating
Shelburne, Tavistock
EXETER - The Exeter Mohawks
are now running on all cylinders, -
but it took a loss to get them that
way.
The Mohawks have scored 41
goals in their last three games since
losing 7-6 to Harriston Blues last
Saturday. Sundaythey pounded Ta-
vistock Royals 13-2 at the South
Huron Rec Centre. Friday night
they beat Shelburne -Muskies 14-4
at the North Dufferin Recreation
. Complex and' last Sunday, scalped
Creemore Chiefs at the SHRC, 14-
6.
After Sunday's game, Mohawk
coach Cord Brooks said his entire
team is playing 60 minutes of
hockey and the results are showing
on the ice.
Senior Panthers are H -P football champs again
By Michelle Ellison
EXETER -.South Huron -Panthers
won the Huron -Perth Conference
senior football Championship in a
very convincing way, by beating
Goderich 13-0 on Saturday. The
South Hilton Panthers defended
their title as Huron -Perth champi-
ons in winning again.
The Panthers blew Goderich out
of the water as They concentrated on
terrific defense in cbmbination with
sweeps, reverses and runs through
the middle for the win.
. In, response to CKNX television's
comment of the Panthers "unimagi-
native" playing, Panther's head
coach Ron Bogart said, "Maybe
-there was no 'imagination' to our
devastating win, but when the of-
fense gains 263 yards rushing, has
11 first downs rushing, one harm-
less-passintercepted, controls the
ball going into the wind for half the
game, and when the defense holds
the opposition to 34 yards rushing,
allows no pass completions, inter-
cepts three passes, and allows three
rushing first downs, and the team
wins 13-0, - Tell me what imagina-
tion do you need." Bogart also add-
ed, "Maybe we had no imagination,
but I'II take our 13-0 victory any
day over imagination."
South Huron took over early in
the first quarter as Dave O'Connor
ran for a 15 -yard touchdown. Jon
O'Connor kicked the convert to
give the Panthers the early 7-0 lead
once. This was on a mishandled
snap on a fourth down kick. Fortu-
nately for South Huron, Thompson
intercepted an attempt pass on the
next play and South Huron took
over again.
Only once did the Vikings receiv-
ers get behind the Panthers. At this
point, one successful play by Gode-
rich could have tied the game for
them. Fortunately the ball was
slightly over thrown.
The fourth quarter brought the
Panthers their second touchdown on
an 18 -yard run touchdown by Rob
Wonnacott. ' Although O'Connor
made the first convert, a penalty
was called and South Huron missed
their second attempt because of a
high snap.
It is very difficult for a team to
claim a title three years in a row
and it is even more difficult to de-
fend one two years in a row over
Goderich but Panther's showed total
confidence on Saturday. - Brent
McDonald, a South Huron Panther,
claimed "We won it for Bogie and
Case." _ .
The defense played a superb
game, keeping Goderich to less
than 50 yards net rushing. Jon
O'Connor of the Panthers said,
"This year our defense had the heart
and the most desire to win than
they've had in a long time."
Joe Gower led the Panthers with
10 key tackles. Norm Bryson had
six and Glenn McBeath, Brent
McDonald and Jon O'Connor each
had five.
Once again the South Huron Pan-
thers have proven they can defend
their title for another year. The
team has had an extremely success-
ful season in the Huron -Perth Con-
ference. Bogart summed it up by
saying "I think we kicked their
butts!"
PANTHERS UPEND VIKINGS - Steve Greb, (23), o1 the South Huron
Panthers, upends a player from Goderich Vikings, (30), during the Huron -
Perth chamoionshio aame in Exeter on Saturday. while teammates, Brent
McDonald, (50), and Andrew Thompson, (28) lay a block on another Viking

By Michelle Ellison
EXETER. - Last Tuesday, South
Huron District High School's jun-
ior boys volleyball team took thc
Huron -Perth Conference tide.
To claim the title, the Panthers
played three matches against Gode-
rich, Mitchell, and Stratford North-
western, winning each match 2-0.
This advanced them to the semi-
final match against Listowel.
The Panthers were defeated 15-12
in their first game against the
Lords. South Huron won their sec-
ond game 15-11, and came from be-
hind a 7-1 count to win their third
game 15-12. Jason Heywood and
Jason Clarke performed well for
South Huron.
South Huron's opponent for the
final match' was Stratford Central.
Although the first game began
'slowly for the Panthers, good set-
ting by Chris Gardner and effective
blocking by Ian Verbeek, led South
Huron to the 15-12 victory.
The Panthers fell behind 5-1 in
their second, game but came back
and won 15-13 to win the title of
Huron -Perth Champions.
Stratford Central will accompany
the Huron -Perth Champions to the

ment on November 26.

Novice hockey team picked up only
one point in four Lambton-
Middlesex League games last week.

Sunday, tied Ilderton 1=1 on Satur-
day, lost to Strathroy 3-0 last Mon-
day and lost 2-1 to Lucan Novem-
ber 5.
Panther couldn't recover from a
fast start by Forest. Forest scored
three times in the first period, two
by Scott Allen and one by Todd
McBryan in defeating Exeter 4-3.
Exeter's goal in the first period
came. off the stick of Rob Turner,
unassisted.
Michael McConnell made it 3-2
with a goal early in the second but
McBryan got that back for Forest
later that period.
Exeter managed to get back to
within a goal when Brian Hayman
scored in the third but couldn't get
the goal they needed to tie.
Forest goalie Scott Vangeel was
the difference in the game, robbing
Exeter shooters on several good
scoring opportunities throughout
the game.
McConnell scored the only goal
for the locals against Ilderton, after
he was set up by Hayman in the
first period.
Ilderton tied the game in the sec-
ond period on a goal by Wayne
Leemcr and that was the way it
stayed.

the three periods in shutting out
Exeter 3-0.

marksman for Exeter in the contest
against Lucan. He scored to give
Exeter a 1.0 lead, from Steven Ra-
senberg, in the second period.
Lucan took the lead tor good on a
pair of tallies from Jeremy Comish,
one from Andrew Martens and one
from Bev Dobbie.

"We are all playing a solid 60
minutes out there and we are elimi-
nating a lot of our mental lapses
which cost us goals against Harris -
ton," said Brooks. "We have got
three solid lines otic there that can
score and no team will be able to
check three lines for 60 minutes.
We have also been working on our
defensive stand as well."
Brooks said Mohawks will be
ready. for Harriston when they come
to the SHRC on Friday, November
25.

Late goal beats Hawks
EXETER - Steve Hagedom's goal
with eight seconds left gave the Ta-
vistock Royals a 3-2 come -from -
behind win over Exeter Hawks in
Western Junior D hockey action at
the South Huron Rec Centre last
Tuesday night.
After being shut out for thefirst
two periods, Tavistock got on the
board after captain Mark Albrecht
stole the puck at. his own blucline,
while Hawks were on the power
play, skated the full length of the
ice, put move . on one Hawk' de-
fcnceman and deposited a wrist shot
in the upper corner. The shot beat
goalie Bill Pauli, who had shut the
door on Tavistock for the first two
periods, with several outstanding
saves.
The goal tied the game at one, af-
ter Mark Morrisey had opened the
scoring for Hawks with a power-
play goal, at 7:52 of the second pe-
riod, from Dave Dalrymple and Dan
Nairn and that looked like it was
going to stand up and be the win-
ner.
Four minutes aftcr Albrecht tied
the game for Royals, Hawks re-
gained the lead on another power-
play goal, this time by Jim Lewis,
from Dalrymple and Doug Clarke.
Tavistock rallied to tie the game
at 16:06 of the third, when Spencer
Rowland beat Pauli, with Rob
Oliver and Jensen Rudy picking up
the assists.
After both teams had several good
chances to get the winner, Tavis-
tock finally did, with Hagendom do-
ing the damage, from Charlie Lup-
ton, with just eight seconds left.
The win was sweet revenge for
Braves' goalie, Derrick Martin, who
played last season with Hawks and
was cut earlier this year by Exeter
and later picked up by Tavistock.
Both goalies playedwell since
both teams had many good scoring
opportunities. Martin stopped 35
Hawk shots, while Pauli- turned
aside 28 Braves shots that were di-
rected his way. -
Hawk coach Jack Nairn said the
shorthanded goal by Albrecht made
the difference in the game
"That shorthanded goal really
turned the game around. We played
hard for two periods and got caught
out of position just that once and it
really cost us. Nobody likes to lose
in the last eight seconds, but we arc
a young team and we have to
bounce back," said Nairn.
