Hensail's war
heroes remembered
HENSALL - Two hundred people
gathered at Hensall's Community
Centre Friday evening to remember
Canada's war-dehd at a banquet held
.by the village Legion. •
:Thc-gucst speaker for the evening
was Rev. Henry Van Esscn, who
was a teenager in Holland during
World War II. -Hc told the audience
he can still remember seeing the
paratroopers and gliders arriving to
liberate the Netherlands in 1944.
"We remain grateful always for
-the efforts of the Canadian army,"
• he said.
Van Essen spoke harshly of -the
current crop off -movies which giori-
fy war. -
"Those who do not know thc past
will not appreciate the future," he
said; adding that one thing people
forget is the suffering experienced
by Europe long after the war was
over because of crushed economics
and the thousands of wounded and
maimed. •
"We must show our children not
only the triumphant flag raising at
Iwo Jima; but -also the beaches lit-
tered With thc'dcad," he said, linking
the increase in violence in today's'
Canada with thelack of remem-
brance of the sufferings of war.
He said the dissatisfaction ex-
pressed in demonstrations, strikes,
and the political slurs on the cam-
paign trail are an indicator violence
- is never too far away. He noted that
the "sticks and stones" axiom is not
really true. - •
"Words do hurt and sooner or later
bones will be broken," he said. .
• Van Essen called for an end to the
violence of words starting with each
family.
"The way we treat each other in
the home is how we :will treat oth-
ers outside the home," he explained.
"The way Germany was treated af-
ter World War 1 had a lot to do
with the rise of Hitler."
