More recycling. information
EXETER - The previous articles
outlined recycling and overpackag-
ing. Ovcrpackaging is a form of
waste reduction. It was stated that
'packaging accounts for approxi-
• mately 40-50 percent of all waste.
However, in your home, non -
recyclable packaging probably ac-
counts for only'a small percentage
of your total output.
Thirty to 40 percent of your
household weekly waste is made up
of organic waste, and this is a sig-
nificant proportion. Biodegradable
materials such as food wastes make
up a great deal of the waste stream.
One might think that, if it's biodeg-
radable, then there's no big deal if
you throw it in the landfill' site be-
cause it will enrich the soil there.
• . However, contained in a green
plastic bag, these wastes don't get a
chance to enrich any soil. The an=
swcr is NOT to throw any of it
away. You should keep your apple
cores, potato peels, carrot tips, left-
overs, leaves and any other biodeg-
radable wastesand put them into a
container in your yard where they
will decompose into a very rich or-
• 'ganic fertilizer that you can use in
your gardens. You should COM-
. POST your organic wastes.
Many people in the Exeter arca
• already compost these materials and
they annually reap the rewards•of
their efforts. With very little effort,
you can provide yourself with years
of healthy gardens while you reduce
the amount of waste going -to land-
, fill.
' Composting is simply the break-
down of organic wastes by soil mi-
cro-organism, in: a soil -like hu-
mas. When Added to soil, the
compost adds vital nutrients to the
soil and conditions thc soil ,so it
will hold water and nutrients ore
efficiently., Some people can have
a successful compost pile in a va-
cant part of their yard, while others
prefer to use a container. Either
way, a fcw simple rules should he
followed.
First, only put organic waste in
your compost pilc. Don't include
meat, though, as it may attract un-
wanted animals to your yard. Also,
never put toxic materials in since
they could kill the micro-organisms
that arc dong the work for you.
Second, you should provide air to
your compost pile (all of it) by pe-

• riodically turning the pile with a
shovel or garden fork. This is due
. to the need for ,oxygen- by the mi-
cro-organisms. If you use a barrel -
like container, make sure there are
many holes in the sides for the pur-
pose of aeration. •
Finally, feed your compost pile
everything it needs. The micro-
organisms need nutrients, that's
why they're doing the job for you.
Keeping out certain biodegradable
materials may starve your compost
pile of needed nutrients. So include .
your leaves and grass clippings as
well as your vegetable wastes from -
your home.
It's r,os+;iblc that a community-
wide composting place could be fea-
sible in the next few years if there
is sufficient support. But, for now,
look after your own backyard,.
Once again, as with thc avoidance
of overpackaged goods, you will
reap the benefits. -
In this case, you provide- your
garden with needed nutrients while
you reduce waste production. For
further information .on composting

ducing household waste, contact the

Letters to the Editor
Dear Sir:
After scanning the paper, I feel
obligated to bring this issue to the
attention of your readers. 1 was
greatly concerned over the fact that
a letter, putting John Turner down,
was placed right beside a picture of
the. Liberal candidate opening the
committee room in Exeter.
Why was this letter not placed in
the area designated for "letters to the
editor", where it belonged? I feel
that everyone has a right to express
a political view, but this letter
seems to have _ been strategically
placed, to the detriment of the Lib-
eral candidate.
I hope THISletter is published,
because we are so often subjected to
letters similar to the one to which 1
am referring. We, the readers, are
getting tired of having one man's
biased political opinions shoved
down our throats time and time
again.
A concerned citizen.
Editor's Note: Undernormal cir-
cumstances unsigned letters are not
printed but, as the complaint is
against this newspaper the rule is
being waived.
Dear Sir.
It is with some trepidation that I
must write this letter on behalf of
Alpha Pi Sorority.
As you know, for the past year
we have been selling cookbooks in
order to raise money for incubator
lights for the local hospital. We
have received a great deal of support
from the community and for this
we are very appreciative. •
Unfortunately, since Jim Beck-
ett's promotion of our cause in his
column, the hospital has advised us
they do not want the lights. This
has, of course, left us in somewhat
of a predicament.
Prtrriarily, we would like to apol-
ogize to all those who bought our
• cookbooks in support of the incu-
bator lights project.
Secondly, after much deliberation,
we have decided to donate the pro-
ceeds to a very worthy community
project, the Lions Youth Centre.
Thank you again to all who sup-
ported us.
'Yours truly,
Beth Anstett,
Secretary, Alpha Pi Sorority

sives Limited, Creighton Rock

year's Convocation ceremonies.
This information may be interest-
ing to members of the community
in your areas. Steve's parents Jim
and Shirley live in Exeter.

Dear Sir:
It couldn't help but be a larger
crowd than last time at the "Ali
Municipal Candidates" meeting at
the high school! Last time nobody
showed up. The other night there
were more than 30 interested citi-
zens, plus a group of Scouts, in
uniform..
And the Scouts asked the best
questions! This was a good exercise
in citizenship, and our Scout lead-
ers are to be commended in seizing
this opportunity for an exercise in
democracy, democracy at work.
Now we have a federal election, a
chance for the enfranchised to vote
for the person and party of choice.
If a person doesn't vote he should
not criticize the results. "Put up -
or shut up."
I feel it was dirty pool for Turner
and Broadbent to be so cynical and
lacking in good taste and respect for
the truth to visit senior citizens and
scare the inmates of homes that
they will lose their pensions if free
trade wins. That is dirty politics
and unworthy of their party heri-
tage:
If you.read it, there is nothing in
the agreement that adversely affects
social programmes, including medi-
care, old age pensions, allowances
for families, child care - the lot. As
for sovereignty, Canadians are too
proud a people to become Ameri-
cans. We can compete with any-
body!
This election is most important
to our nation's future, it is our op-
portunity to join the 21st century,
not slip backwards in time. And
Murray Cardiff is a sincere, active
-M.P., a potential Minister of Agri-
culture in the next cabinet.
Yours truly
"Gibby"
J.M. Gibson
I would like to thank
all those who supp-
ported me in the
recent election.
Your support was
appreciated
