Letters
Dear Sir:
As usual, it was a cold, bitter day
when the town recognized Remem-
brance Day.
In spite of the weather, a small
crowd gathered at the Cenotaph cer-
emony to pay respect to those who
died in defense of Canada and the
freedoms we enjoy. As the "Last
Post" shivered in the frigid air, they
could not help but notice that the
numbers of veterans who marched
With the Legion had thinned - if not
their waist lines!
This year the service was held at
the United Church where Rev.
Hawley preached a thoughtful, sen-
sitive sermon, much appreciated by
his large and attentive audience. It
was touching to see the young chil-
dren taking an active part in the ser-
vice
of remembrance, a credit to
their leaders, citizens like "Tawny
Owl" Ruth Mercer, among others.
I could not help noticing the
words of our national anthem "We
stand on guard for thee". Thanks to
the present P.C.. government, Cana-
da is becoming well equipped with
modern weapons instead of the
.creaky second rate stuff supplied by
P.E. Trudeau and his regime. And
now we shall have nuclear powered
subs for our long suffering navy,
thanks to Perrin Beatty. Canada's
fighting men and women can more
than hold their own with the
world's best, but they need the best .
tools available. Our peace -keeping
forces have helped win the nobel
prize.
Lets keep up thc good work! If
we do - we may never have to "re-
pel borders"! Broadbent and Turner
wouldhelp hand us over to the So-
viets. Yours truly
Gibby J.M. Gibson
Shipka.

SHIPKA - In the August 31 is-
sue, I reported on Sue Anne
Schroeder winning a bursary to go
to Germany and study German, at
Schwabisch Hall. This story had
happy consequences. People were
visiting in Zurich, at that time,
from this town in Germany, and
came to visit Sue Anne's parents,
Pat and Jake Schroeder. Sincethey
returned to Germany they have vis-
ited with Sue Anne. I believe this
shows how much weekly papers are
read, as this brought together peo-
ple from two countries.
Personals
Lorne Fenner, accompanied by
his son Jim, of Camlachie and
some men friends from Forest, have
returned home from a two week
hunting trip in Northern Ontario, at
Engleharty, near the Quebec border.
One of the men in this party bagged
a bull moose. Now these families
will shortly he enjoying moose
roasts.
Don and Eliijbeth Adams became
third time grandparents last Thurs-
day, when an 11 lb. boy was born
to Brock and Dianne Adams, in
London.
Don and Mabel Fraser, and Lorne
and Dorothy Fenner recently attend-
ed a family dinner in London to cel-
ebrate their sister and brother-in-
law, Audrey and Ken Westman's
35th wedding anniversary.
This week I will tell you the epi-
logue of the dog and duck, (insepar-
able friends) from a cousin. She
called the dog "Goway", and the
duck "Quackers".
--The dog -is a -full -gr wn, purebred
German Shepherd. He is so majes-
tic and intelligent looking, he has
been renamed "King". We have all
adjusted to one another and like the
dog
Quackers was always making the
dog's drinking water dirty, so Hu
made him a pen of his own, but he
soon flew out to be with the dog.
Quackers got sent to live with a
neighbour's flock of ducks who
have a pond. We hope he is happy
there until we want a duck dinner
this fall.

Home safety topic at Varna UCW
VARNA - Brucefield Fire Depart-
ment volunteers Pete Caldwell and
-Dave Roy led a discussion on
Home Safety with members of the
Varna United Church Women at
their November meeting on Thurs-
day evening. They showed the
women how to use their fire extin-
guishers and told them to check
them annually for pressure. A short
burse aimed at the base of the fire is
often enough to extinguish it. ..
They can be re -charged at some
hardware stores and Clinton Auto
Parts, or ask your insurance compa-
ny where you should take them.
Keep your extinguisher handy, but
not too close to where a fire is like-
ly to occur, such as the stove. Nev-
er move a burning pot or pan from
the stove; kill the fire where it is. If
you don't have an extinguisher, use
soda or flour, anything that will
smother it.
Make sure your family knows
where the escape route is ,if you
have a fire; and where they should
gather so you can be sure everyone
is out. Have some way of getting
OPEN LIBERAL. OFFICE - The Huron -Bruce Liberal office was opened
last week on Exeter's Main street. Cutting the ribbon are Garnet Hicks,
candidate Ken Dunlop and Bob Swartman. -
What a meeting
EXETER - Did we have a meet-
ing! A former resident of Kirkton,
Lorne Marshall was in charge of the
program for the November. Exeter
Senior Citizens' meeting. He invit-
ed his good friends from Kirkton,
the Paul Brothers and Shirley, who
generously entertained in their usual
fashion!
Ruth Insley and Wilma Davis
played piano ducts and Wilma
played lively stcpdance tunes while
Bob Blair made his wooden, jointed
doll and team of horses really step.
Lorne read a tongue twister with-
out a mistake and told several jokes

out of your upstairs level other than
using the stairs.
Stoves and furnaces were tie sub-
ject of a lot of discussion. If you
smell oil fumes, check your chim-
ney for a bird's nest or other block-
age. Pete said they have removed as
.much as 10 pails of stuff from a
chimney; All chimneys and pipes
should be checked annually at least
and pipes from wood stoves into
chimneys maybe every month.
Older fireplaces are difficult to
check as they usually have ledges '
• that catch dirt and make it hard to
see up into them. A good hot wood
fire once a day prevents creosote
buildup in a chimney. If it's on fire,
turn off your fumacc Or stove drafts
. to prevent air from getting to the
fire. Know where the furnace shut-
off switch is! Don't hesitate to call
the fire department at any hour.
They come quietly unless it's -a ma-
jor fire. Know , which department
you should call and keep their num-
ber handy. •
