Precious Blood takes two soccer titles. EXETER- - Precious Blood - School hosted the 1988-89 Huron- Perth Roman Catholic School As- sociation soccer finals last Tuesday and did very well despite being one of the smaller schools, taking two titles.. The hosts took the primary -mixed and intermediate boys titles. Four schools took partin the pri- mary -mixed division, which was played in a round-robin format. In the first match, Precious Blood .blanked Wingham 2-0, with Darryl Parsons picking up both goals. Precious . Blood met Si.,Colum- ban in the second game and won an- other close one,' 2-1. Jeremy Van Esbrock and Ben Glavin scored for the winners in this one. In the third game, Precious Blood blanked Stratford St. Joseph's 2-0, with Greg Geoffrey and Parsons scoring the goals. This gave Precious Blood a per- fect six points at the end of the round-robin and 'it was good enough to claim the title. St. Joe's had four points -at the end of the round-robin to take second, St. Columban two points and Winghatn had no points. Mt. Carmel placed first in the Junior boys division, St. Patrick's, from Kinkora, was second, St. Jo- seph's third and Godcrich St. Mary's fourth. St. Ambrose was first in the Jun- for girls' division, with St. Pat- rick's second, Mt. Carmel third and St. Mary's fourth. St. Joseph's from Kingsbridge - was first in the Intermediate girls division, Stratford St. Michael's was second, Mt. Carmel third and St. Patrick's from Dublin was fourth- . The hosts took first place : in the Intermediate boys division, with St. Michael's second, Dublin St. Pat- rick's third and St. Mary's fourth. Precious Blood played St. Marys in the first game and eventually won 1-0 on a goal scored by Som - sack Phannavong, in the first half. Next was St. Patrick's from Du- blin. After a scoreless first half, Precious Blood got the only break it would need when Scan McCann drew a penalty kick. Sivichay Sengkhoumany took the -penalty and scored the only goal of the game. This meant Precious Blood and St: Michael's would meet to decide the tournament champions, since both teams were unbeaten going in. Sengkhoumany scored the first goal of this game after McCann drew another penalty kick to make it 1-0. In the second half Greg Agnew scored, after taking a pass from Chad Gilfillan and that was the way it stood, with Exeter winning.2-0. The tournament was originally scheduled for October 25 but had to be postponed until last Tuesday be- cause of wet fields. Although the fields were wet last Tuesday the tournament went ahead as scheduled because it couldn't be put off any longer. Play was very good even though the fields were wet. Pee Wees win twice, tie J (ETER - The Exeter Pee Wee Legionaires picked up five of a pos- sible six -points in hockey action last week, with a pair of wins and a tie in three starts. Last Monday, Exeter bumped Zu- rich 8-5. Last Wednesday, they tied Lucan 2-2 and on Sunday Exeter chopped down Forest 5-4. Mark Glavin and Derck Beckett each had hat tricks in the win over Zurich while Scan McCann picked up the single goal for Exeter. Jamie Ramer paced Zurich, with a four - goal effort and Ken Rau scored the other. Ryan Stuart, Glavin and Steve 'Farquhar led Exeter with two assists each. EXETER 2 LUCAN 2 Glavin and Beckett did the damage for Exeter in this contest, with McCann and Derek Campbell as- sisting on Glavin's goal and Mark Brintnell and Brian Gardner assisted on Beckett's tally. Joe Hitchcock scored both goals for Lucan, one was unassisted and one was set up by Jamie Lightfoot. EXETER 5 FOREST 4 Jeff Lingard, Brian Gardner, Gla- vin, Campbell and Stuart hit the score sheet for Exeter in this con- test, with Stuart's goal eventually being the game winner. Ryan Fulton opened the scoring for Exeter, at 2:17 of the first, from Panthers end year By Michelle Ellison EXETER - South Huron District High School's Senior boys volley- ball team ended thcir regular -season play on a rather sour note in Clin- ton, last Thursday. The Panthers only won one game 15-10 against Clinton. Clinton took the other two games 15-9 and 15-2. Secing as Clinton was not even in the top six teams of the Huron -Perth league, South Huron was disappointed in the result. Despite this poor tournament, South Huron managed to finish third overall in regular season play with a 20-13 record. This is the best league finish the boys have ever had. The Humn-Perth final tournament was held yesterday (Tuesday) at Stratford Central, who finished first in league- play. Hcrc South Huron will compete with the top' six teams from Huron -Perth. Waxers blank Forest EXETER - The Exeter Waxers hockey team gave a good defensive showing against Forest in Sham- rock League action on Sunday and came away with a 3-0 win. Jeff MacLean opened the scoring for Exeter with an unassisted goal in the first period, to make it 1.0 for the home team. After a scoreless second period, David Farquhar scored twice in the third, giving Exctcr a pair of insu- rance goals. MacLean picked up one assist on one of Farquhar's pair and the other was unassisted. Joey Bierling picked up the Mut- out in goal for the Waxers. With the win, the Waxers im- proves its league record to 3-4-2. Peter Fragiskatos. On. October 15, 13ullets were beat- en 6-4 by Watford, on October 28 they beat Exeter Mac Cats 7-1, on October 29 thcy_bugtpJ off Park- hill 8=3, in Parkhill, on Saturday Exeter beat Lucan 8-2 and Monday night they lost a close 5-4 decision. Greg Agnew had a pair of goals for Exeter against Watford, while Shawn Webster and Jamie Rolph had singles. Scott Parsons had four goals in the romp over Mac Cats, while sin- gles ingles went to Mike Strong, Rolph and Trevor Truemer. Willy Partridge _scored the only goal for the Mac Cats. • Agnow had a hat trick in the win over Parkhill, Parsons had another pair for Exeter, while Mike Strong had the single goal, Jason McBride also hada pair. Agnew kept up his hot scoring on Saturday as he got his second straight hat trick, as well as picking up a pair of assists, while heating Lucan at the'South Huron Rcc Ccn= "ire. Parsons chipped in a pair of goals and lour assists. Rolph also had a pair of goals and the single one -to went Webster. Crunchers win once and lose once EXETER - The Exeter Atom Crunchers won once and lost once in Lambton-Middlesex Hockey. League action last week. Last Wednesday, Mt. Brydges squeaked past Exeter 3-2 at the South Huron Rcc Centre and on Saturday Exeter bounced back to beat llderton Flyers 2-1, also at the SHRC. Bryce Hann opened the scoring for Exeter in the first period on Sat- urday, when he scored from Billy Kline. Geoff Hann scored Exeter's other goal later in the first period, on an unassisted effort. `.lderton finally got on the board with one minute left in the game. Broncos beat Forest EXETER - The Exeter Broncos travelled to Forest on Sunday, and came home with a 3-2 victory. The Broncos came out flying, but were unable to score in the first pe- riod. Forest opened the scoring in the second period with two goals 38 seconds apart. Chad Gilfillan brought the Broncos back to a one goal difference 27 seconds later. Adam Hern and Ben Guenther as- sisted on the goal. Brent Urlin tied the game late in the second period. The goal was set up by Rob Lynn and Andrew Hem. Late in the third period, Andrew Hern scored the winning goal while shorthanded en a hard shot front the blueline. The Broncos travel to Stratford on Saturday, and host St. Marys on Sunday at 4:30. CO.OP Exeter's offence kept llderton busy with many shots on goal. Bryon Ellcrington, Todd Baker and Trevor Obre put forth fine 'skating efforts *for Exeter. Michael Schwindt made many fine saves while picking up the win in net for Crunchers. MT. BRYDGES 3 EXETER 2 ` Geoff Hann scored the only goal of the first period, unassisted, to give Ewer a 1-0 lead. After Mt. Brydgcs tied the game in the second period, they took the • Icad in the third with a pair of goals. - Hann was -able to get Exeter hack in the game when he scored his sec- ond, to make it a 3-2 game; hut • couldn't get the one to tic :the con- test. Jcff Inch, Matthew Herr, Billy K1inq, all played well for Exeter. Exeter played well despite' going against a larger, well -sized team and didn't help theircause by taking some needless penalties.
