Sports Spotlight
by Wayne Proctor
Ever since men began lacing up skates to play hockey, the game
has had trouble with violence. -
.Back in the 1930's it was'Eddic Shore who high slicked Ace Bai-
.. lcy:so severely that it eventually ended his career. -
During the 1950:s and .60's, it was the rough and rugged Gordie
fiowe.and Bdx)tn Boom Geoffrion Gra. Most of us remember Gordic
t lows as a great scoter and player, but he was also one of the rough-
est players when he was in his priine. The same can be said for'Ge-
offrlon
The Philadelphia Flyers came along in the 1970's and brawled their
way to two Stanley Cups with the like of Dave Schultz, Bob Kelly
and Don Saleski.
Last year the National Hockey League had two scary incidents,
when -Dave Brown, of Philadelphia, nearly decapitated Thomas Sand-
strom, of the New York Rangers, with a vicious cross-check. Also,
Dino Cicarelli, of the Minnesota North Stars tried to rearrange-To-
Tonialvta-plc Leafs' defence man -Luke -Richardsons face -with his stick
_ during a game at Maple Leaf Gardens. Cicarclli was later charged in
that incident and fined heavily and spent one day behind bars. Brown
was suspended for 10 games as was Cicarclli
V iolcnce does not seem to be letting up this year. In the last week
NHL vice president Brian O'Neill has handed out three suspensions
for violent acts.
The first was a six -game suspension handed to Mark Messier, the
• Edmonton Oilers for hitting Rich Sutter, of Vancouver, in the teeth
with his stick, breaking four of them: Dental records later showed
that Messier hit Sutter. so hard that black tape was found in Sutter's
teeth that were broken. I think Sutter is better off letting his dentist
• rcmove.his teeth'and not Messier.
The second was an eight -game suspension to Flyers' Rick Tocchct,
who tried to gauge out a New York Islanders' players' eye during a
IOC
• But all of that hit home and was overshadowed last week when Ex-
eter native Dave Shaw, of the Rangers, surpassed them all when
O'Neill handed Shaw a 12 -game suspension for slashing Mario Le-
. micux, of the Penguins, with two hands across the chest during a
game at Madison. Square Gardens on October 30.
Just before the slashing incident Shaw had checked Lemieux, the
NHL scoring leader, cleanly along the boards, Lemieux retaliated by
cross-checking Shaw near the side of the Rangers` net. Shaw took
exception to that and swung his stick with both hands striking Le-
mieux.
. During his statement pronouncing sentence on Shaw last Wednes-
day, O'Neill said he went lightly on Shaw because it was his first of-
fence, but his excuse of retaliation because ofLemieux's cross-check
was "totally unacceptable.
From his.home in New York on Friday, Shaw gave his version of
what happened during a phone interview.
"I• hit Mario pretty hard along thc hoards with a clean check and I
think_it shook hint up a little hit. The puck came hack to- him he
took a.shot on net, then the play .started going..up the other way, he
saw me,.cross-checked me with two hands and 1 got him hack," said
Shaw.
."I didn't think -1 hit -him that hard but he. fell to the ice and didn't
get up. 1 didn't think any of the other Penguins would have wanted
to get at back at me if Mario had gotten up right away, and i wanted.
_him get up right away and when he was till lying there after a while
I: knew 1 was in trouble. 1 think if he would have gotten up right
away 1 would have only gotten a five-minute penalty, but when he
didn't 1 knew i was gone.'
Naturally Shaw as well as Ranger's general manager Phil Esposito
thought the 12game suspension was a little harsh. Esposito had the
- option of appealing the suspension; but decided not to because of the
.implication: that can happen. -
Shaw said.Messicr's act of violence was much worse than his and
was frustrated Messier's penalty was only half as harsh.
"In the NHL it all depends upon who you arc when it comes to
handing out discipline.: I think if Messier would have done what i did
they prohahly would have -only given him six or seven games," said
Shaw. "People come out to sec guys like Messier play hockey and
don't like to sec them out for very long. 1 guess they want to make
an example of me."
Nevertheless,. Shaw regrets what he did and said he prohahly will
- never do it again, because not only is he hurting himself, he is hurt-
ing his team.- Rangers arc currently two points ahead of Pittsburgh,
in first place in the Patrick Division standings. •
Almost overshadowed -in that game with Pittsburgh was Shaw's
first goal of the season.
Shaw will continue to practice with the Rangers to keep in shape
hut will not be getting paid. He is eligible to return to the lineup on
November 27, when the Rangers will play host to the New York is-
landers at Madison Square Gardens.
I think Shaw -would be the first one to admit he deserves to be sus-
pended for what he did, but if it had been anybody besides Lemieux
or Wayne Grctzky, he probably would have gotten six or eight
games maximum. Lcmicux incidentally got up and skated off under
his own power after being slashed by Shaw with only abruiscd ster-
num; but hurt his wrist in a game on Thursday and will miss three
or four games.
