DATED AT USBORNE TOWNSHIP, ONTARIO THiS 19TH DAY OF OCTOBER, 1988. Sandra J. Strang Clerk and Returning Officer Township of Usborne R.R. #3, Exeter, Ontario NOM 1S0 of everyday li T has been a hu- man cndeavou, down through the ages The prehistoric cave paintings of central Europe and the distinctive motifs seen on everything from rocking chairs to barn doors in Pennsylvania Dutch communities are all examples of folk art. Heather Redick recently opened a shop -studio in Zurich to display her artistic talents and pass on her ex- pertise through daytime and evening classes in decorative art. Redick has been painting since childhood, taking art lessons at eve- ry opportunity; and showing an ac- tive interest in "every craft going". As life became busier and busier, she had less and less time to spend happily and productively with water colours or oils. After resigning in September 1987 as general manager of the Huron Country Playhouse, Redick felt "a craving to paint again". For the past year, she has been painting, and working with stained glass. A seminar she took this summer taught by decorative artist Dorothy Eden in her increasingly famous craft shop and restaurant in a renovated old church in North- brook near Kaladar gave Redick the incentive to consider a shop of her own. Once the decision was made, Re- dick moved with her usual speed. In two weeks she had rented and reju- venated a store on Goshen St. in downtown Zurich that had been empty for years, tracked down sup- pliers, purchased stock, advertised her classes, and opened for busi- ness. Redick has had the full support of her family in her new venture. Her husband cuts out the wooden pieces used in the classes. "I cut out one, hand it to Rotjcrt and ask for 25 more", Redick smiled. While her mother was busy get- ting the store ready, daughter Kim cooked the dinners. Besides working on the renovations, son Craig pro- vided the stores name: The Tole Booth. The majority of those enrolled in one of the three evening and one af- ternoon class at The Tole Booth had never held an artist's brush before. By the time, they have finished the Five-week course, each will proudly take home a lazy susan with a hand - painted strawberries and narcissus motif, and an embellished wooden heart locket to fill with dried flow- ers and hang on the wall. The budding artists are taught control of the brush, the use of col- our, contrast and shading, and prop- er care of paints and brushes. "Getting used to the brush, how to Toad, hold and lift at the right time, being able to feel the paint coming out of the hair of the brush, is most important. it happens all of a sudden. Press. Pull. Lift. You do one perfectly, then another. For goodness sake!" was Redick's de- scription of the creative process. The students arc not bound by , rigid rules, but encouraged to put their own unique stamp on what they are painting. "If you don't follow the pattern Recipe for peace Ingredients 12 cups of love 1 1/2 cups of promise 5 cups of nuclear disarmament 3 cups of famine relief 1 cup of common sense 2 3/4 cups of honour 3 cups of health 6 cups of welfare 2 cups of trust 4 cups of kindness 3 3/4 cups of thoughtfulness 9 cups of politeness Directions Put in the first five ingredients and take out any nuclear missiles, bombs or other harmful things. Stir softly and add the next seven ingre- dients. - Bryan McAllister Usborne Central Grade 6 perfectly, or change the colour or shape of a leaf, who cares? The leaf will be beautiful, because it is your leaf. Regardless of what I tell them, each person expresses a certain amount of individuality. With each piece, the more one paints, the more it jumps out", Redick noted, adding the caution that "it won't happen overnight, but, like piano lessons, the more you put in the more you get out". The first course's S60 cost covers everything but the brushes. The fee pays for the wooden forms, the paints, the patterns and everything else needed. A number of additional classes are planned before Christmas. One will teach how to make a wooden can- dle -holding tree, and another will centre on an appealing shelf and clothes pegs for a child's room. Next year Rcdick will offer class- es in clothes painting and glitter painting; either technique, or a combination of the two, can trans- form an ordinary t -shirt or skirt into a unique work of art. Redick may also start a class in stained glass techniques. Rcdick is accepting commissions to paint articles for those who want to buy a finished product.
