Missing were Carla Tay- lor, Lorna Miller, Steven Hendrick, Ken Desjardine, Nick Parsons and Lisa Stewardson. • Change retaining walLdesign GRAND BEND - During its regu- lar meeting last Tuesday, village council was told that the cost of ten wccks of work by the summer co- ordinator was $2,334.45.. A grant was approved by Employment and Immigration Canada in thc amount of $1,592 to help cover the cost, so the total amount owing from Grand Bend is only S742.45. Reeve Harold Green said "it was money well spent." * * * * • Council was advised through a letter that.the design of a proposed.. 440 foot retaining wall made of wood and steel, to be built along the base of Grand Bend hill, must be changed and instead of 6" I beams every eight feet, they will be .put in every four feet. Along with other changes, this must be done to prevent predicted slippage of the wall. Due to the redesign of the wall, thc price will also be changed. The addition will cost an estimated S10,000, according to public works foreman Bud Markham, laritcly due to the amount of steel doubling. Markham went ori to -say that the new design will not mean crum- pling walls should water levels in the lake start to rise.' The design should also allow up to 25' of levet parking spaces. - • * * * * Thc Grand Bend waste site was used by Doug Rclouw of RR 2 (;rand Bend during the recent open day at that site. It was originally in- tended to be used by people who live within the village limits of Grand Bend. Rclouw signed a state- ment saying he was a resident of Golden Age Club GRAND BEND - Members of the Grand Bend Golden Age Club met last Wednesday afternoon in St. John's parish hall, with 23 in atten- dance. They opened with "0 Cana- da" and the "Lord's Prayer". A sin- galong of old favorites was enjoyed. as Nola Love accompanied -them on thc piano. President Lorcen Gill chaired the business. The proceeds of the Farmer's Market and the October luncheon netted the club over $300. The December meeting will be a +!- hot turkey dinner at 12:30 p.m. Lorcen reported on the Zone 8 Ral- ly held in October at the Exeter Le- gion, that she and Catharine Junker had attended. Dorothy Cutting's group was in charge of the entertainment program and the lunch. Dorothy conducted a word contest and Elda Adams read • "The Opinion of One Antique." Annie Moroni read "The Profile of a Senior" and an article on Remem- brance Day. Before lunch the group played card games of UNO, euchre, crokinolc and solo. Grand Bend and entitled to use the site. Since council found out he wasn't, it agreed to fine Relouw S50 plus the S8 cost of using the waste site. * * * * Markham said that the village will have use of a compactor at the waste site on November 24 and 25 and if needed it could stay until No- vember 26. The cost to the village will be S300 a day and council ap- proved, saying the compactor was necessary. * * * * Councilor Shirley Mitchell ex- pressed concerns over the "closed for season" sign that hangs at the tem: porary OPP station on Main St. "People have told me that having a sign like that is only inviting trou- blc to happen," said Mitchell. Green said there was nothing that council could do, "putting that sign up was strictly up to the. OPP." • That sign .was stolen from off•the building but later returned. Mitchell also said she .was very - pleased with the new paintings on the side of the walls at the minia turc golf course on Main street. Mitchell said, "it really spruces up the arca makes the street look a whole lot brighter and I am very • happy with what they have done.- * * * *• Deputy -reeve Dennis. Minutes of the previous meeting wcrc read and approved. President Jim Davis is to see the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lucan Le- gion to set. a date for our annual Christmas Dinner. Cost of a rabies shot will be $7 and all arc welcome to attend. * * * *:. Clerk Dianne Mollard's report showed.that parking revenues in 1988 increased S6,480.42 over 1987. But parking rates in 1988 were increased from $4 to S7 and council said with the increase in 'parking fees, the percentage of reve- nue was very disappointing. Around the Bend GRAND BEND - Ralph Fcrgu- son, federal Liberal candidate for Lantbton-Middlesex, met with area farmers at the Alhambra hall last •Thursday morning, November 3. The farm wives served a tasty hot breakfast, then. Mr. Ferguson ad- dressed the issue of Free Trade and answered questions from the group. Most of them expressed serious doubts about he FTA and its effects on the farm community. The United Church Women will meet one week later this month on.
