Sports Spotlight
by Wayne Proctor
The average tan in the stands at a Mohawks game has no idea what it
is like behind the 'scenes which makes the Mohawks such a competi-
tive team -on the ice. Most of it is called "organization."
Organization is one thing that Palmerston, Honeywood and Hills -
burgh did not have, (three other teams in the Senior B loop), and as a
.result,wcnt belly up and folded,
- Mohawk general manager Bob- Rowc said he -thought Hillsburgh
dropped out hecause of a tack of players and poor planning by:jhcir c-
ecutive. Ile said Hillsburgh kept going with the, same players year after
year and many of those players didn't want to play anymore and the ex-
ecutive didn't. bother going out -to look for, younger ones.
Rowe :said Palmerston folded, because they were too much in debt and
couldn't afford to make it even worse, by putting another tear on the
ice.
For most teams, bad organizations come from "one man doing too
many things for 100 long, according to Rowe. "The duties must be
shared and not handled by just one person.' You must also be well sup -
p tined financially and in the community,"- he added. - -
Mohawks have 15 people, men and women, who share duties on the
executive, with each -one having a role to do and they all do it well,
which seems to -show on, the ice.
Running a hockey club is not cheap. Rowe said the operating cost of
the Mohawks is 550,000 a year. To help offset those costs the team
goes out to look for sponsors. • .- -
Fof their money, each sponsor has their name put on a sweater that
is worn by a player and a half -page ad in the program. Rowe said one
of the more helpful sponsors over the last four years has been Huron
Motor Products, but was quick to point out that all sponsors are im-
portant.
One of the biggest expense is ice time: The team-practiscs every day
JOT an hour or two and plays once or sometimes twice a week at home
for about three hours and that adds up to a lot of ice time that someone
has to pay for.
Not many people rcalizc that it •also costs a lot of money for road
games. The team rents a bus for most road games, which costs S30()
each time it hits the road.
Each player is also given a new uniform and as many sticks as he -
needs during a season. One player told me sonic guys go through three
sticks a years, while another guy might go through 23 sticks a year, so
it all adds -up.:
• Rowe said the motive for starting the team four years ago was to
"provide former junior hockey players a place to play with no cost to
them." •The biggest .cost to most players is time. Some players. drive in for
each practice and game from as far away as St. Marys, New Hamburg
and Goderich, and -even coach Gord Brooks has to drive in to Exctcr
from the north end o1- London.
"We want guys who are totally committed to this hockey club and I
think that is what we have and why we arc always sy ompctitive each
year," said Rowe.
Traveling with the team on the bus last Friday t., Elora 1 noticed
what a dedicated hunch the Mohawks really are, and it is easy to sec
why they are one of the top Senior hockey clubs in Canada each year
and should contipuc to he so for a long time. • -
