Mohawks clip Rocks 3-2
ELORA - It has been -said -that
good things: come- to those wino
wait.
• The Exeter Mohawks waited until
the- second period to start getting
their offence in gear in their Senior
B hockey game against the FIlora
Rocks Friday night and eventually
won 372, before -a good crowd at the
Elora Community Centre. •
The Mohawks came -out flat in
the opening period and let the
.Rocks take the play -to than and -
were fortunate to be trailing only l-
0 after 20 minutes. Rod Martin put .
• Elora on top with a goal at 10:18 of
the first, after being set up by Dave -
Nedclko and Jeff Baumon.
If it were not for Rick Pickul
coming up big in net for Exeter in
the first period, the score could have
been-mtich worse.
The first intermission seemed to
help the Mohawks catch.their breath
. and they carne out flying- in the sec-
ond period; but it took a strange
goal by Wayne -Urbshott, at 5:31 of
the period, to get the -Mohawks on
the board.
. Jeff Shipley took a shot on.
Rocks' goalie David Weiss that
• Seemed to handcuff Weiss. going
ol'f his pads, to Urhshott, who
somehow put it -in the net while he-
ing knocked down by a Rocks'dc-
fenseman.
"I saw the puck come off his
. pads, it squirted to me- l hit it with
'My stick, tripped over the goalie
and it went in," said Urbshou.
That- goal seemed to inspire the
• Mohawks. They proceeded to out;-
play
ut=play the Rocks for -the rest of the
period and managed to take the lead
for good with. Ron Goodhands goal
from John Kernick and Jeff Pfaff,
.with 5:56 left in the second period.
Both teams had -good scoring
chances in the third period but Ker -
hick took a slap shot on Weiss that
he misjudged and it went into the
net -at 4:37 -of the final period, to
give the Mohawks a two -goal edge.
Ron Elliot and Pfaff drew the as-
sists.
• - After that, the Mohawks let up in
intensity. and the Rocks took the
play to the Mohawks. Too many
Mohawk penalties also gave thc
Rocks some life. Elora had a two-
man advantage for four straight
minutes.. •
Elora managed to cut the lead to
3-2 when Brad Altman scored with
4:47 -left in the contest, with Elora
enjoying one of the two-man advan-
tages. The goal came only 12 sec-
onds after Mohawk captain Mark
1
Socner was called for using.an illi
gal stick. The blade was curved too
much.
The Mohawks ran into more pen-
alty trouble and Elora was coming
on trying to get the equaliser but
Pikul was equal to the task._Exeter
did get fortunate when Rocks' Terry
Hoelshcr missed an open net with
about one minute left that would
have -tied the game. -
Mohawk coach Gord Brooks said
he felt the key to the game was big
breaks for his team when they need-
ed -them and good .goaltending by
Pikul.
"We got knocked around a little
bit in the first period but worked
hard in the second and got some
goof breaks. Pik (Rick Pikul) really
kept us in the game and made the
difference." said Brooks.
The contest was also a Hardy Cup
battle and now gives Exctcr three
points in the four -game series
against Elora, who has one point af-
ter coming away with a i-1 tic last
Sunday at -the South Huron Rcc
Centre. -
Mohawks' next game will be -Sat-
urday night at 8 p.m. when they
travel to Harriston. They return
home to the South Huron Rcc Ccn- -
