By Michelle Ellison
EXE,TliR : Nicole Rtisie learned
first hand what Ontario athletics are
• all about on October 14, when she
won the Western.Ontano Secondary-,
School Association'; girls tennis
single championship.
Nicole. is one of.lour daughters of
Stuart -and Robyn Rosie. The arni-
ly is on..an exchange fromGis-
- home, New Zealand and now makes
its home in C'rcditon "until the new
year.
Nicole is a grade 13 student at.
,South Huron District High School
and won the Huron -Perth tennis
championship for girl's singles for
SH. Thus advanced her to the WOS-
SA tournament in London where
she won three Snatches to win,the
title. First she met a London oppo-
nent, winning the first two sets car-
ily, 6 -3. -Her next opponent, also
- from.Loridon, was ranked ninth in
: •Ontario. This semi-final match
• proved to be somewhat more diffi-
cult. as she lost the- first set 6-3.
Fortunately,' she made a tremendous
comeback winning the next.set,6-3
and the tic breakcr,.8 -6.
• In the final game, Nicole was
• faced With.a Strathroy player, also
ranking -in Ontario. She played
well, winning the first and last sets
6-3 and 6-4 to win WOSSA for SH,
the only Panther to do.so.
When comparing the competition
at WOSSA to that in New Zealand,
Nicole says, "In the main centres (
of New Zealand) the competition is
about the same, may beleven better,
but in our district it is worse."-
Tennis
orse."Tennis is not the only sport in.
which Nicole participates at SH.
She is the goaltender for the girls
soccer - team. and. the- all -Ontario-
. bound field- hockey team. Last win-
ter she won the schools curling
tournament and enjoys indoor soc-
cer. -
•Down under, Nicole plays ten-
- nis, soccer and netball (similar to
hardball) but is also involved in a

land is surrounded by beaches,

sport, not only for excitement but
• to learn to save lives skilfully.
When comparing her school
;ports in New. Zealand to those at
She notices that SH's coaches
focus mare on team improvement
where as New Zealand concentrates
on sell improvement. She says
. that school sports arc important in
New Zealand but one doesn't re-
ceive time off school to partici-
pate. She feels that this system
works well but is a disadvantage
because she doesn't have many free
• weekends. -
Nicole's school in New Zealand
recognizes their students somewhat
differently than SH, while SH's
athletes are awarded mainly for
their skill in a particular sport, Ni-
- cole's school mixes academics
with athletics.
•Nicole feels, "recognition is im-
portant but 'it's not that important
to be recognized constantly, only
when one does well."_
Nicole is definitely. not the only
athlete in the Rosie household.
The entire family is sports orient-
ed. Nicole believes this is certainly -
a motive in her activities. - -
Her youngest sister, Monique,
was a trampolinist on the New
-Zealand team and would have com
Meted in the world championships
ip the United States this year. Un-
fbrtunately, she was unable to lo-
cate a coach in Ontario. Monique
also plays on SH's-Midget girls'
basketball team.
Liana was also a talented tram-
-polinist until .an arin injury forced
her to withdraw from the sport. She
also plays on SH's senior girls bas-
ketball team and soccer team.
Fleur is an excellent long -dis-
tance runner. She runs cross -county
in hew. Zealand but didn't take up
the Sport at SH. She also plays net
ball
Nicole's father, Stuart, used to
represent the district of Poverty -Bay
in squash, badminton and tennis.
He played on New Zealand's North
island field hockey team as well.
. Nicole's mother, Robyn, is also
very athletic •in New Zealand she
plays squash and badminton and in
Ontario she enjoys ja-icrcist:-•
Weight training one. hour each day
is also pan of her regimen. -
Nicole has a very busy -schedule.
To begin she plays tennis and bikes
for three hours a day, three times a-
wcek. The• other two days of the
school week she takes a half hour
run and docs one hourof circuit
training. Her weekend workouts in-
volve two,. one-hour runs and. a half
hour of sprint work. Taking into
consideration that she attend!: field.
hockey practice all week, she defi-
nitely must budget her time well.
How does she keep up? She rises
with the roosters at five o'clock in
the morning and works on home- '
-woak late at night and during her
two spares at SH.
Nicole would like to coniinyye her
athletic career into univers ty. Her .
goal is to be number one in wom-
en's .tennis for her district iq New
Zealand. it seems that the standard r
- is quite low in her district and she
says, "1 will be number one be-
cause Iheac-is no competition."
SN has -definitely benefited from
Nicole's stay in Ontario. She has
brought honour and recognition to
the school. Hopefully when she re-
turns to New Zealand she will have
teamed something from her experi-
ences at SH and .will take with her
many, fond memories." .
