GRAND -BEND - St. Michael's
'Catholic Women's League hosted
the -Huron-.Perth Deanery at Blyth
on October 19, in the Theatre -Hall.
Most .of the local C.W.L._ councils
sent representatives from Grand
Bend, Zurich, Exeter and Mount
Carmel. -
Diocesan Spiritual .Director Fa-
ther McKenna complimented the la-
dies on the fact that this deanery al-
warys has the best attendance, with
over 175 C.W.L. members and 14
priests, their C.W.L. spiritual diree-
. tors,- coming to the meeting:
Diocesan C.W.L. President Ange-
la DeBruyn presided as Father
McKenna led -a "Spiritual Work-
shop." Father commended the
C.W.L. in their work for God and
Canada.. They labor unceasingly for
projects and causes, taking very
good care of Canada, but what
'about God? He cntouraged the
councils to 'develop. their spiritual
'side; with the help of their spiritual
directors for as Christians they arc
called to be leaven, light, salt to the
worl(f .
Spirituality is grounded in the
Liturgy, actively participating in
the- Mass, not merely going
through the -motions. Meetings
could include a Rosary, Bible read-
ings, short -Bible studies,•or speak-
ers on a spiritual theme. A day of
Recollection could be planned, in-
viting other councils, and Bible
study groups are encouraged. The
New American Bible, the Jerusalem
Bible and the (Catholic) Good News
Bible are all recommended. A dec-
ade of the Scriptural Rosary adds in-
tcrest_at a meeting, or there could
be a mini -Holy Hour when there is
no other speaker. What any council
chooses to do should be guided by
the C.\V.L. constitution, the teach-
ing so Vatican 11 and Mary as their
model and patroness.
Mass was celebrated in St. Mi-
chael's Mission Church, followed
by lunch at the hall. The afternoon
session consisted of conveners' re-
ports and recommendations. Presi-
dent Angela DcBruyn announced
that the Diocesan Convention for
1989 would he held in London, on
May 1-3, with the banquet held on
the Tuesday evening,•May 2. The
1989 theme for the C.W.L. is
"Women Share, with Christ in the
Life -and Mission of the *Church.'
Sheila Howard-, Past Provincial
President of Ontario, a London resi-
dent, was elected as Secretary -
Treasurer on the National C.W.L.

zation" in. the Church will he held

EXETER South Huron's Dis-

basketball team was one of eight
participants in the annual Parkhill
Optimists tournament held at North
Middlesex District High School.
The girls defeated Kincardine on
Friday night to advance to the
semi-finals on Saturday. Unfortu-
nately South Huron lost to the
hosts of the tournament.
With South 11uron-not playing to
their potential in the first half of
play,- Kincardine pulleda head and

in the second .half of play, the
girls still fought for the lead. For-
tunately South I luron shaped up in
time to win 40-35.
Top 'scorer was Laurrc Forrester
. with 26 points.. She was followed
by Michelle Ellison with seven and
Christine Rose with three.
Saturday's game proved to be
much more challenging for South
Huron. Too many mental errors by
South Huron allowed North Mid-
dlesex to take a convincing 17-7
lead in the first half.
South Huron put forth a g(xxf ef-
fort until the end but were unable
to catch Parkhill. The final score
was 39-22.
Once again Forrester was top
scorer for South Huron with 1I
points, followed by . Cassie Van-
Dongcn with five, Michelle Ellison.
