• the document entitled "Challenges
and Opportunities" was introduced
by the Ministry of C'onpnunity and
. Social Services, This document
promised to have a great impact on
the lives of all people who have
been- labelled as Developmentally
halydicapped. It called for the closure
of institutions, thc reduction of
sheltered workshop placements and
placed a whole hearted emphasis on .
community • integration for pcopic•
who have been labelled. This docu-
ment clearly indicated that all alter-
natives would be explored and de-
veloped to.support labelled people
and stated that institutionalization
of children would be an option of
the last resort. -

Services has directed that county-
wide Planning committees be
!tinned. The Planning Committees
will be charged with the task of pri-
orizing the allocation of funds com-
ing into the county to provide ser-
vices for labeled people. In
particular, this group will be con-
cerned with seeing- that any. new
programs developed. in Huron
County -address needs -which have
been identified as a concern by the
whole arca. • •

To allow this committee to accu-
rately reflect the concerns of la-
- belled people in tic county_ it must
be consumer driven and its member-
ship must include. consumers and
f-aniilies of consumers. This 12 per
son cotnrnittec will he comprised of
one Board member from each of the
Community Living Associations,
one.representative from each of the
county s three people First Groups,
and tic three Executive Directors of
the Associations for Community
Living..A••priority now is,10-find
presentation from the parents of la-
tidied-people-from
a-
bel1d peoplcfrom cacti of the three
arcus in the county.
To this end, meetings will be
held in Exeter, Godcrich, and Wing -
ham for parents to meet, air their
concerns and appoint a representa-
tive from each area to sit on the
Planning Committee. Notification
of the meeting, times -and locations
will appear in this and other local
newspapers. A contact number for
each arca is provided and parents.of
labelled people are urged to attend.

On Saturday August 27 a talking
ALF doll (worth S125) was taken
from the Dominion Tavern in Zu-
rich. This doll was on loan to the
owners of the tavern, David and.
Marie Gelinas from their seven-
year old son Matthew.
TheGclinas were using ALF in a
display where ALF was posed
playing the drums. Matthew re-
ceived the toy as a Christmas pres-
ent from •his parents. To quote
Matthew's mother,. -"He cannot
figure out why someone would
steal his ALF."
This was a busy time in Zurich as
the Bean. Festival was in full swing
and many people from out of the
.arca passed through. We believe
that the theft of ALF started Out -as
just a joke. it appears ills joke got

Bell gears up for backlog
KITCHENER - Bell Canada is
gearing up for a return to normal
levels of operation, now that the
17 -week strike by its technicians
and operators is over.
Throughout Ontario and Quchec,
plans arc being set up to start work-
ing on the backlog of orders that
has accumulated during the sum-
mer.
"We need to tackle the orders
we've had on file for some time as
well as the requests for new service
that come in daily," says Debbi.

will contact all customers who
asked for service during the strike.
If a customer has an installation or
repair request on file, we ask that
they wait for us to call them to set
up a date for the work to be done."

iniscellaneous requests will take
scvcral months.

Seniors meet
at Lucan
LUCAN - Mary Kooy was at the
piano for the national anticrn as we
opened our meeting on Thursday.
We were *lighted to sec the largest
attendance for many months.
Arnold Damen was our only
birthday celebrant. Mona Nlaybrury
was welcomed. President Jini Davis
announced an invitation to the mini
Hall at St. Patricks; Lucan, Thurs-
day'evcning. We were reminded of
the regular Senior euchre at Park-
hill.
Next Thursday is Games Day
when the seniors enjoy the games
-of their choice. There will be no
prizes, we just play for tie pleasure
of it.
It was suggested.that we wear a
mask and dress up next 11 ursday as.

next week will be provided by
Chris Hesse), Lula Culbcr; and Lill
Dobbs.
Marion Noels read a poem on
"Mother" and Verna ibbitson read a
couple of poems and played an old
song entitled "Your Own Back
Yard" on her tape recorder.
She asked if anyone was familiar
with it, she had many happy mem-
ories of the song, as her mother
sang it for her when. she was a little
girl.
