. lies.
By 1969, he was drafted as.presi-
dent of the restructured Ontario Fed,
eraticin of Agriculture: He served as
OFA president for seven years, the
longest tenure in the organization's
history-.
Achievments during.that period
included property rebates, removal
of sales tax on faun fuels, reduced
rural 'hydro rates'and an exemption
on capital gains tax on farm assets.
He also served as chairman of the
Ontario Bean Growers Marketing
Board and was appointed- chairman

cate our government`s, consumers
and some farmers. Skidding prices

you feed it or sell it. We are upset
with our present crop insurance. It's
not suitable for the 1980's.We
• als6 need reliable credit at affordable

president Chris Palmer.
'When is the hest time of the year
to soil, test?' 1 know that thc.answcr
-I give is strictly of academic useful-
ness - because the soil will only get
tested when th.c farmer has time
(i.e. when there is no fieldwork or
chores to do). if he doesn't have:
time;-fisc--shoii Id--probably-h ire
someone to test for him.
An idcal•timc to sample is during
some of these damp fall days -after
crop harvest, but before fall plow-
ing. I suggest this time because it
is' easier to walk (or ride) over un-
plowed fields, .and you can avoid
sampling residual fertilizer handed
with the corn planter. This also en-
sures that your results will be back
this fall, permitting you to plan
your fertilizer program early enough
to buy fertilizer based on price
breaks or income tax purposes.
if you are soil sampling corn
ground for .an indication of atrazine
carryover, be aware that the Provin-
cial Pesticide Lab in Guelph will be
charging $20. per sample for soil
received- .after_ Qctobcr 1st. Of
course, this- lab is noC-The--only
show.in town, but even at.S20. per
sample it is still the cheapest lab
test.
And while you arc harvesting (or
soil -sampling), keep an cyc out for
strange new weeds. If you arc in
doubt as to weed identification, con-
tact your local supply dealer or the
Ontario Ministry of Agriculturc{and
Foul office.
