Laotian
community
shocked by
shooting
The shooting death of a
Kitchener man at Vanastra Sat-
urday is an isolated incident and
in no way indicates the local
Laotian community is prone to
using violence in settling .dis-
putes" says Gerry Fergusson
who has assisted Southeast
Asians in thc area.
Fergusson; a member of Ex-
eter Pentecostal Church, says
the church has sponsored sever-
al families when they sought
refuge .in Canada from .life
threatening situations in Asia.
Ht described the Laotians as
hardworking and fun -loving
who sometimes are subjected
to abuse on the job. •
-The shooting at. Vanastra
happened ata Laotian soccer
dance. Dead is Bounmy Thapra-
seuth, 26 of Kitchener who •
was shot in the head., Bounsy
Vilaysone, 29, of Oakville was
wounded in the incident.
A warrant has been issued tor.
thc arrest of Vienngcun Vong-
sa, 24,.of Hamilton.
Approximately 30 Laotian
families -live in thearea after
being sponsored by local
churches. Fergusson said many
of them arc going through a
period of difficulty because of
unemployment caused by the
Fleck and Protective Plastics
closures. -
"It's coincidence that a spe-
cial: church service is planned
for the Laotians this -Sunday at
the Pentecostal Church featur-
ing Carl Young, a minister
who has served in Thailand,"
Fergusson said.
