Free lecture on wildlife diseases at Guelph
GUELPH - Wildlife diseases,
equine medicine and food safety are
Key topics in the University of
Guelph's second annual fall confer-
ence for practicing veterinarians
October 13 to 15. The Ontario
Veterinary college will host its an-
nual Schofield Memorial Lecture
as part of the conference.
The keynote address-- Wildlife
Diseases: So What? Who Cares?" --
will be given October 14 at 4 p.m.
by Dr. Thomas Yuill of the Uni-
versity of Wisconsin School of
Veterinary Medicine.. Yuiil will
discuss the prevalence of parasitic
and infectious organisms in wild
birds and mammals and the dangers
they represent for humans and do-
mestic animals.
Yuill's theme will be carried over
into the regular conference program
with sessions on wildlife medicine,
the control of disease in game -
ranched wildlife..A joint session
by Dr. Denna Benn, director of ani-
mal care services, and Dr. Bruce
Hunter, director of the OVC wild
bird clinic, will focus on animal
welfare issues and wildlife rehabili-
tation.
In recognition of the 100th anni-
versary of the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, the program
will include several sessions on
reglatory medicine. These lectures
will deal with the role of provin-
cial and federal veterinarians in
controlling food safety and moni-
toring animal health and disease.
Hands-on labs like those offered
in small animal reconstructive sur-
gery, ophthalmology and equine ra-
diology and pathology will use
OVC facilities. One of the confer-
ence objectives is to familiarize
veterinarians with the diagnostic
and treatment facilities available to
their patients through referral to
OVC, says Dr. Jim Stowe, exten-
sion co-ordinator.
Initiated last year for the col-
lege's 125th anniversary, the con-
ference represents a new thrust in
OVC's commitment to provide
continuing education opportunities
for veterinarians and animal health
care workers, says Stowe. In addi-
tion to sponsoring programs, the
college makes its facilities and re-
sources available to veterinary as-
sociations and related groups.
A lifestyles program is included
in this year's conference, as well as
a sequel to last year's popular musi-
cal revue. "Vets II:Hats Off and
Hands Out to OMAF," written and
directed by songwriter/musician Da-
vid Archibald, will focus on the
government veterinarian.
Admission to the Schofield lec-
ture in War Memorial Hall is free,
but seating is by ticket only. Tick-
ets can be obtained from the OVA
