For the home -bound
Offer telephone reassurance
WINGHAM - A new service is
being:Offered by thc Town and
Country •Homemakers. to arca sen-
iors and homebound people - a tele-
phone reassurance program.
Bev Bruwn.and Sallie Lawton are
•-• the, co-ordinators of the program.
They arc very excited about its po-
t; ntial to reach out to people across
the county who Jive alone or are
disabled,,.. •
It also serves to fulfill the home-
- makers mandate of keeping people
..independent and in their own -
hornes. •
In alnutshcll, the telephone reas• ,
surance program i5 a. system
through which a daily call is pro
vided to elderly; ill or disabled per-
sons at an appointed time, seven
'days -a week.
These. calls, made by volunteers,
will make sure the client is all right
and secondly, give him or her the
chance to hear a friendly and con-
cerned voice for a few minutes each
-day. •
• If the volunteer caller feels there
could be a problem, he or she goes
into an already -established emcrgen-
cyprocedure, says Ms. Brown.
-It is not a new idea by any
means, in fact, many people•are in
the habit of calling their loved ones
"every day. However, some people
have no one to check with them on
a daily basis and perhaps would feel
more secure if they did.
• The calls are limited to four or
five minutes, but if -the clients
would like longer conversations, it
may be possible to put them in
touch -with each other or refer them
to the friendly -visitor program.
Ms. Brown says she already has
several volunteers lined up, but is
looking for more. She suggests that
it is a good job for a person who
works -in an office or other shut-ins
as it takes just a few moments each
day.
Although the program will be •
running throughout Huron County,
no long distance calling will be re-
quired, And, Ms. Brown adds, it is
completely free of charge. . •
Those wanting more information
are asked to telephone the Town and
'Country Homemakers at 357-3222
and ask for Ms. Brown or Ms. Law-
ton. Art students at arca high
schools have been busy making
posters to advertise the. program and
these will be placed in various loca-
tions throughout. the county, along
with brochures.
Male chorus to sing here
EXETER - Rare is the person:to
whom music does not appeal. Rar-
er--, still,- are those unmoved by
• men's voices blended in Male
Chorus harmony.
The Exeter arca is rightfully
• proud of a long musical tradition,
of which male chorus/singing has
been an important part. Continued
community interest in -music is
• manifest by the various choirs and
hands that flourish in the arca to-
- day. -
' -Mile chorus concerts, however,
-have not been heard here for quite
some time. And that's about to
chanes! On October 29, at 8 p.m.,
the Ambassadors, a group of 27
singing men from Hamilton, Ont.
will .be in concert at the Exeter
United Church.
, The Ambassador group is now in
its twentieth year and has become a
polished, well-balanced group.
Here are some excerpts from cri-
tiques by competent adjudicators:
"A fine choir with a robust sound
and vitality". (Earle Terrey - Uni-
versity of Western Ontario). Lorne
Betts of the- Hamilton Spectator
wrote, "How superbly the male
Voices captured and sustained the
mood of Schubert's Sanctus, The
choir is pleased with the high stand-
ings obtained in the C.B.C. spon-
sored Canada -wide choral contests.
The popularity of this group to a
large extent is due to the high enter-
tainment value of their concerts.
Each programme t' Imrhing for
everyone: selection, . ,m sen-
sitive renditions of g. choruses
such as Pic, Jesu, from Cherubini's
Requiem, and Gounod's By Baby-
lon's Wave, to light-hearted num-
bers like Yellow Rose of Texas, the
Whiffenpoof Song, to ever popular
spirituals such as Steal Away and
Dry Bones.
This concert is one that many in
the Exeter arca will not want to
miss.
