Marionette show
BLYTH - Beautiful wooden mari-
onettes magically come to life in
the expert hands of their creators,
.Heather Bishop -and Daryll Taylor,
in thc beloved story of Cindcrclla
-which will be performed at Blyth
Memorial Hall on Saturday, Octo-
ber- 29th at 2 .p.m. as part of their
Children's Festival of. Entertain-
ment Series. This delightful produc-
tion from thcMaritimes is based on
the original French story and is set
in - Medieval times. The music is
from Prokoficv's Cindcrclla ballet.
Marionettes are more than hand
puppets or 4iand and rod puppets;
they arc the traditional European
puppet as in the story of Pinno-
chio. In fact, Heather Bishop's ca-
reer as a puppeteer began at the age
of 12 years of age when she saw a
production of Pinnochio in Wolf-
ville. "Thc moment a marionette
comes on stage, they have so much
strength and impact," saysBishop.
."At least that's how it affected mc.
So I decided to pursue it further."
Saturday afternoon's .Cinderella
will have a different twist than the
familiar Walt Disney version. Cin-
derella patiently works by the fire-
place -as her mean sisters taunt and
tease her. The sisters go through
crazy antics in preparation for the
Ball. The Prince's delightful and
wise companion, the Court Jester,
knows the' Ball will be thc most
important night -of the Prince's life.
Cindcrclla meets her Godmother, a
mysterious old lady, who has wait-
ed eighteen years before visiting her
beloved godchild. Godmother magi-
cally transforms Cinderella -for the
Ball!
Bishop -says the show has been a
hit' with children everywhere they
have played. "Children just love
them. Marionettes are right in their
world. We've had children come up
and ask if they have real skin. Th -e
younger children especially are fas-
cinated. Older kids, say 13 or •14,
are more interested in our technique,
where we've been, how we got in-
volved. But the younger kids just
love the marionettes by them-
selves."
In this time of repetitious televi-
sion programming, music videos
and computer games, a child's im-
agination is seldom challenged.
Maritime Marionettes is challeng-
ing, a' lot of fun and excellent thea-
tre! Tickets arc on sale now through
the Blyth • Festival. Box Office and
may be reserved . by calling 523-
9300/9225. Advance tickets are
