Stop broadcast
road spraying
LONDON - Beginning next
spring, Ontario Hydro will stop the
broadcast spraying of herbicides on
brush under power lines along road-
sides and near residential. lots, Hy-
dro Vice -President Hal Wright an-
nounced today at the utility's
Muskoka Area office in Brace
bridge.
"Our customers have been telling
us they are concerned about the use
of herbicides," Wright said. "As a
result, we are going to introduce al-
ternative ways of controlling vege-
tation that grows into power lines.
Along roadsides and near residences,
crews will begin cutting the fast-
growing trees that interfere with
power lines, then selectively apply
herbicides directly to the stumps to
prevent re -growth."
"This program will reduce Hy-
dro's use of herbicides by 35 per-
cent," Wright explained. "it is a
start towards even further reductions
in our use of herbicides. However,
herbicides will still be needed, par-
ticularly on those cross -county,
high voltage tower lines.
Hydro's continuing research into
reducing herbicide use includes the
development of new grass cover
crops that inhibit tall, fast-growing
brush, along with research into new
tools and techniques for doing the
work.
