Zurich Scouting season gets big start By Carmel Sweeney ZURICH The Zurich Boy Scouts went on an over -night camp out at Ken Gascho's Park near Zu- rich, along_withtheir leaders Hub Thiel, Karl Rcgicr Sr. and Mozart Gclinas Jr. This newly -formed group of scouts hold their meetings every Tuesday night at the Zurich arena: The boys would like to thank the Hensall Scout pack for the use of two tents and the Grand Bend scouts for two tents also. Plus a big thank you to Ken Gascho for the use of his park. The Zurich Beavers also went camping at the farm home of Phyl- lis and Earl Deichert, RR 2, Zurich. The boys slept in four tents and enjoyed a camp fire with the help of their four leaders and one mother. The Beavers have their meetings every Tuesday evening at Zurich Public School for the 19 boys signed up. The Zurich Cub pack also meet at the public school every Tuesday night. - At their last meeting seven Bea- vers "Swam up" to cubs in a spe- cial ceremony. They all went on a scavenger hunt through town. -A "group committee" made up of parents, teenagers or grandparents is needed is help organize event for all the scouting groups. Cougar Column Zurich Public School ■ ■ Kindergarten We in kindergarten arc off to a great start this year. We have been keeping a daily class diary recording the special things that have been happening 'in the classroom. We have already made three books for the class to read. We've made a gingerbread counting book; the peo- ple in our school book, and a book with our pictures in it. We take these books home and show our parents what we have learned before they become part of the classroom -library. Mrs. Marilyn Bowie has become part of our staff as a teaching assist- ant and will be working with Mrs. Smith: in our kindergarten class- room. Grades 2-3 We have 23 students who are ea- ger to work in grades 2 and 3 this year. W.e have to learn many new and interesting things in grade 2 and 3. We have already read lots of fun stories. We arc learning about our community; Zurich, in social stud- ies. Grades 4 and 5 Bienvenue to 'our new students: Brian Dallas, Chris Keyser, Nathan Hutton, and Shauna McKinnon. This year our homeroom teacher Mrs. Brintnell is also a french teacher. Therefore we use as much french as possible in our classroom all day long. For example: Each morning we begin. the day by sing- ing "O Canada" in french. Grades 5 and 6 We have 20 students in grade six, and nine in grade 5. Everyone actu- ally seemed happy to be back with their friends after their two month vacation. Daily routines have been estab- lished and all of us had to write a "Me" poster on which we put down our interests and feelings. Everyone has made excellent progress to date. We would like to. welcome our new grade five stu- dent, Peter Caslick. Grades 7 and .8 G'day mates from grades 7 and 8; We have started the year off with our pen pal letters. So far we have received and returned four letters from New Zealand. During the win- ter break Mrs, Rosie will be return- ing to New Zealand and Ms. Wallen will return to Canada. Lastbatnot least, for preparation for the annual cross-country meet at Exeter, the school team has been doing laps around the block. The big race is on October 5th: 'Last year the Senior Boys won the pennant. Good Luck to everyone! Story Hour The children who attended the sto- ry hour at the library last Thursday had fun playing games and listening to stories. They made book- markers to take home along with some library books. The next story . hour will be held Thursday, October 20 at 2 p.m. Rest Home Auxiliary The monthly meeting was held on October 4. The happy couple will be living in Zurich. Sister Loretta Ducharme spent from August 18 to September 27 with her two brothers, Matthew and Paul before leaving for Peru where she will work with the missions for the next two years. Members of the M.Y.F. group from the Mennonite Church attend- ed a retreat at Silver Lake Mennon- ite Camp over the weekend. P.T.A.
