are going do this year. We are just
going to take things one game at a
time. Our goal is to just have a bet-
ter season than we did last year and
hopefully win the Hardy Cup this
year," said Brooks.
Books admitted he has not seen
other teams in the league play so he
is .not sure what competition they
will pose for Jhe Mohawks but he
did say, "most teams will be stock-
ing up to get after us." -
Brooks admitted most new guys
will, "be in for a rude awakening
when the season starts," because
most teams will not be as easy to
beat as Dorchester was. -Sunday.
night. ..
The team's roster is not yet final-
ized, because Brooks said he could
still use help on forward and defence
this year. Final roster changes do
not have to be made until mid No-
vember.

in season opener
EXETER - The Lucan Irish
opened the Western Junior D Hock-
ey League season with a convincing
8-2 .win over their neighboring ri-
vals, the Exeter Hawks, at the
South Huron Recreation Centre Fri-
day night.
Although the Irish were short in
manpower, (four players were sus-
pended, two were injured and two
had previous commitments), they
proved to be the more disciplined
team as the Hawks took several un-
necessary penalties and took advan-
tage scoring three power play goals.
Irish coach Dave Revington said
he was pleased with the effort of his
tcam since he was undcr staffed.
"1 was expecting to do well to-
night and we did. We moved the
puck well and did othcr things well
which was nice to see since we
were missing so many guys," said
Revington:
Hawks' coach AI Quinn said -one
bad period cost his team.
"The second period did us in. We
made too many silly mistakes since
we arc such a young team and they
took advantage," said Quinn.
Quinn admitted this is going to
be a rebuilding year for.hiS,squad.
Forward Joel Campbell at age 13 is
one of the youngest ever to play
junior hockey in Exeter. if he were
still playing minor hockey he
would be at Pee Wee level.
"This is definitely a rebuilding
'year for us but we arc.going to get
better. We. have to -get good mile-
age out of our veterans and we
shouldget good goaltending, which
means a lot. We arc going to give
it our best shot," said Quinn. "It is
going to take a total team effort for
us to win:' - .

first period Friday night by scoring
five unanswered second -period goals

Panthers hold annual invitational meet
EXETER - The South Huron
District High School held its annu-
al invitational cross country meet
and 20 schools from the arca were
able to attend. But the real winner
was the weather.
High winds, cold temperatures
and snow flurries made it difficult
for most runners when they were
starting the race and the muddy
fields also helped to keep down the
race times.
The hosts did well in their own
meet as wcli. The Panthers had four
runners place in the top three indi-
vidually and the tcam placed in the
top three four times, out of six di-
visions.

Panthers edge Listowel
By Michelle Ellison
EXETER - On Thursday, South
Huron's junior football team wel-
comed Listowerto their field fora
league game.
Although the Panthers defeated
the Lords 4-3, head coach Davc Cox
felt the team didn't play up to their
full potential.
At half time, Listowel led three
to zero on a field goal. in the sec-
ond half,-SH's defense improved but
the offense couldn't get going.
SH did manage to make a come -
back when 1.I\10wcl conceded two
points on a safety touch and Randy
Johnson punted for two singles•
making the final score four to three -
for the Panthers.
Cox feels the problem this year
has been largely due to injury. It .
began when asthma forced a starting
lineman to quit playing.
Thursday, two of three starting
backs didn't play and therefore SH
began with a, second string hack
field. Cox hopes that when thc in-
jured players return. things will
look better for thc junior Panthers.
