Playhouse looks for new director
GRAND BEND - Artistic director
Sandy Macdonald will not be re-
turning to the Huron Country Play-
house after a financially disastrous
summer season. The board of direc-
tors decided not to renew his con-
tract and are looking for a new di-
rector.
Playhouse general manager Tim
Davisson confirmed that the theatre
faces a substantial deficit this fall,
even though the 1987 season turned
a surplus.
"I think we're going to go after
some fund-raising appeals to get us
through to next year," said Davis -
son, noting that some of last year's
surplus went to reupholstering the
main stage seats and to renovations
in the farm house where the Young
Company rehearsed.
Without air conditioning in either
of the two theatres, Davisson said
some of the audience were kept
away during the August heat.
Fans were installed in the main
stage last year, but air conditioning
is not feasible in the poorly -sealed
converted barn. Davisson hopes
funds can be found to install air
conditioning in Playhouse Two,
where a low ceiling prevents the
use of fans.

Alhambras

GRAND BEND - Algarva #168
of the Order of Alhambra have been
very busy so far this fall, and have
still more events scheduled. They
held their annual "Church Collec-
tion" after all Masses on Labour
Day weekend at the Grand Bend and
Forest churches, collecting over
$1,700 for their charity, the mental-
ly handicapped of our community..
Grand Commander Martie Kelders
would like to thank Sirnoble Ed
Mommerstecg, who organized the
collection, and Fathers Beck and
McManus for their support.
The annual "Teen -Dance" was
held on September 24 at the Taxan-
dria Hall, and so many kids crowded
in they had to close the doors at 10
p.m. This event not only provides
area youth with a supervised good
time, but is also one of the best
fund raisers of the Alhambra, about
$3,000 this year. Thanks to all
Sirnobles and Sultanas who helped
out.
The nomination and election
meeting was held September 24 at
the Alhambra Hall. Most of the
Si ::obles and their Sultanas attend-
ing to be as hot next year," he said.
In order to remain solvent the
Playhouse will be looking for more
provincial and federal funding and
for better box office receipts.
"1 definitely don't want to increase
ticket prices," said Davisson, adding
that the season's playbill was also a
cause of poor sales:
"I don't think we can just blame
the weather," he said.
Davisson described Windfall as
the best production of the season,
but pointed out it had a lower bud-
get as an unknown play. The ad-
ministration knew it would not
bring capacity crowds to the 700 -
seat theatre.
Bruce Woodley, a member of the
Playhouse board of directors, ex-.
plained that the board decided not to
renew their option on Macdonald's
contract because box office sales
were down "significantly" compared
, to previous years.
Woodley said the 1989 season is
likely to be more family-oriented
than this year's performances.
"There weren't a lot of things you
could take children to," he said.
While Macdonald came into "nor-
mal, everyday conflict" with some
of the Playhouse staff, Woodley in-
sisted "Sandy had many good quail -
raise $3,000
ed the evening, enjoying a delicious
roast beef dinner. Special guests
included Louis Prieur, Grand Com-
mander of Garcia #230, MacGregor,
Yvan Gawvin, DRD of Guezera

mander of Guezera #72, Windsor.

Macdonald left the Playhouse on
September 10, 20 days before his
contract expired.
An advertisement has been placed
in the Actor's Equity magazine and
the selection of a new director will
begin on October 31. Woodley said
the hiring process will be carried
out as quickly as possible to get the
1989 season under way.
Woodley confirmed Key for Two
was the best -attended play of the
season, something which surprised
hirn, but he wasn't prepared to lay
any blame on the hot weather.
"I honestly don't fault the heat
that much," he said, pointing out
that Mercer Beaucoup fell in the
hottest part of the year, but still at-
tracted many bus tours.
The board will be looking careful-
ly at plays for the new season be-
fore approval. Woodley said some
of the responsibility for the poor
1988 season has to rest with the
board because they approved Macdo-
nald's selections.
Adventure in dining
at Oakwood Inn
By Roberta Walker
GRAND BEND - A glittering
crowd was on hand to help Barbara
Gower celebrate "A New Adventure
In Dining" at Oakwood Inn last
Sunday evening. Patrons were
greeted by Barbara and owner David
Scatchard for a truly special feast.
Black and white balloons and black
and silver ribbons, and twinkle
lights glittering from potted trees,
added a touch of discreet elegance to
the gala affair.
The diners began their feast with
a bacon and walnut pate on home-
made melba toast, followed by
smoked rabbit in an extravagant
green tossed salad, and a grapefruit
sorbet to cleanse the palate, all
served with the appropriate white
wine. A full-bodied red accompa-
nied a wild game buffet of duck,.
roasted buffalo and wild boar, veni-
son stew and rather -exotic fresh
vegetables, each with its own sauce
or garnish. There was white wine
for the dessert, a delicious white and
dark chocolate mousse, incompara-
bly rich and decadent, to end a fabu-
lous meal!
Barbara Gower introduced her
kitchen staff, who helped prepare
the feast. She made special men-
tion of her family there, her hus-
band Lonnie, parents and siblings
who have always supported her, es-
pecially during those three uncertain
years when she moved from Detroit
to Canada and entered the gourmet -
health food line. Now her family
was on hand to celebrate her sue -
cess. .
Peter Bacon and his B/G Little ,
Band, Chris Robinson on saxo-
phone
axophone and clarinet, and Denise Pe -
ley, vocalist, provided great music
for the guests from soulful blues to
mellow jazz to hot rock and roll,
they could listen or dance to but al-
ways would enjoy!
Barb presented her Thanksgiving
menu of roast turkey with apple al-
mond stuffing or honey glazed ham,
available on Sunday and Monday.
The menu promises another feast
for the discriminating diner, -so
make your reservations now. She
also intends to change the Oakwood
menu quarterly,for each season, to
offer a wider range appropriate for
warmer or cooler weather.
Everyone bade farewell to Kevin
and Marilyn Snook , of the Thirsty
Fox, who will be leaving the Grand
Bend community to open a new re-
sort in St. Lucia, in the Caribbean. -
Thcy have a good manager in place
at"theThirsty Fox, but will be re- .
turning occasionally to say hello.
On behalf of all the patrons, Barba-
ra wished them good luck in their
new enterprise.
The evening continued as the
crowd danced -to the music of Peter
Bacon and congratulated Barb Gow-
er and_ Dave Scatchard on a "night
to remember."
