Mr. Harris noted that the federal government's commitment. of 5450,000 is "somewhat more than a third" of the cost of the initial phase of the expansion, estimated at 51,289,885, but admitted the board "had hoped for up to 5600,000," one-third of the pro- ject's total cost. "All it means is that our own fund-raising activities will have to dig a little deeper," Mr. Hams said. "But in view of the truly outstand- ing utstanding job our (fund-raising) commit- tee has done so far; I don't think that this will be much of a prob- lem." In less than three months, • the Festival's fund-raising committee, under capital campaign project co- ordinator Lynda Lentz of Blyth, has raised in excess of S236,000 from hundreds of individual and corporate contributions. In addition, Mr. Har- BLYTH - The federal government has announced a contribution of $450,000 toward the °first phase of the Blyth Festival's S1.8 million capital expansion project, ending nearly three months of speculation_ as to whether the project would be able to proceed on schedule. The promise came only hours after Prime Minister Brian Mulroney an- nounced an election for November 21. "We're dancing, on our desks!" said Katherine Kaszas, the Festi- val's artistic director, as Huron - Bruce MP Murray Cardiff made the announcement at a press conference at the theatre Saturday evening in front of more than 100 theatre -pa- trons gathered. for the Festival's fust -ever "Murder Mystcry Dinner" which followed. Several rounds of enthusiastic applause broke out as Mr. Cardiff spoke. The contribution is expected to be matched or exceeded shortly by the provincial government, which has twice extended the Festival's fund- ing application deadline in the hopes that the senior government would make a commitment to the project. In a letter to local newspapers last week, Huron MPP Jack Riddell said that his government has been ready to offer its support to the Festival expansion for some time, "the only hold-up (being) that the federal gov- crnment has not yet made a com- mitment for its portion of the funds required." As soon as that commit- ment came, Mr. Riddell said, the province "will be able to process the application." "But the whole thing has been looking very good," Festival gener- al manager Joel Harris said Mon- day. "Obviously, we've had to change our plans because we can't interrupt Memorial Hall's busy winter sched- ule, white a lot of the other work can be done before freeze-up this year," Ms. Gardner said. She added that the Festival's building committee, under chairman Don McCaffrey of Exeter, will be meeting immediately to plan the tender criteria for Locales 11 and III, which will likely be let separately. "We hope to have the shell of the new (garage) facility up before freeze-up, with it all completed and ready for use by next March," said Mr. Harris.
