Record number of exhibitors STRATFORD - Bigger and better than ever. Those were the words used by Ontario Plowmen's Association president Fred Lewis in describing the 1988 Intern tional Plowing Match held on thrfarm of Hanna' and Augustin Watch near Stratford. Lewis of RR 2, Denfield said this year's match exceeded all expecta- tions with record crowds and also in the number of exhibitors. Saturday's attendance of near 45,000 brought the total for the five days of thc match to almost 175,000. The previous' high for the week was in W ingham, in .1978 when over .133,699 went through tht turnstiles. The annual event is called the In- ternational Plowing Match and farm machinery show and that's exactly what it is. There were 708 exhibits and displays all related to the farm- jng industry. Lewis says exhibitors totalled 560 at last year's match. On open- ing day this, year, a prospective ex- hibitor came along and said he found a space of around on which he could set,ip a display and he did. As president of the OPA and re- siding only 30 minutes from the site, Lewis was very involved in or- ganization of the event rand made daily trips for more than two weeks. He paid t1'tbute to the Perth com- mittee, chairman Doug Aitcheson and thc more than 2,000 volunteers from the county who were there every day. Lewis added, "They showed so much enthusiasm. It was great". The 1989.match will be held in Essex county to be followed in suc- ceeding years by Brant and Lamb - ton. The site for the 1992 match will be cho$en at the next OPA an- nual meeting, in Toronto in Febru- ary. Lewis indicated at least four counticst have shown interest in hosting the 1992 match. They are • Victoria county, region of Durham, Haldimand-Wentworth and Bruce. Fred Lewis will continue as presi- dent until the annual meeting. At that time vice-president Bill Martin of Elgin county will take over.
