Pierce tells about Mexican life

GRANTON - At Granton United
Church Sunday morning, Rev. and
Mrs. Pierce's son Michael showed
pictures and told of a learning ex-
perience he and a group of young
people had on a trip to Mexico.
At St. Thomas Anglican
Church, Rev. Beverley Wheeler
was in charge of the Harvest
Thanksgiving service. Her sermon
message was taken from the book
of Job and her text was "The fear
of the Lord", that is Wisdom and
to depart from evil is understand-

solo by Lynda Hodgins "Close to
God" accompanied by the organist
Marlene French. The lessons were
read by Lois Herbert and the mini-
ster. Flowers, fruits and vegetables
of the harvest • beautified the
church. A time of fellowship fol-
lowed in the church hall
One Tuesday evenii.g, September
13, the Granton Womens Institute
met at the home of Mrs. Elmer
Harlton. Guest speaker was Jean
McComb of Elginfield. Jean told
about the "Master Gardener" course
that she had taken and some of the
requirements necessary to complete
the course.
She demonstrated the making of
corsages. The motto was "If human-
ity could be taught, self-control, and
selfishness controlled, there would
be no need of atom control" and was
illustrated in a reading by Nora Wis-
sell. Elsie Dann read an article on
the "Facts in, favor of irradiated
foods" also a humorous readong`on
"Loony Laws".

of Theatre London learned tonight
that the theatre had enjoyed another
highly successful season. Theatre
London, which was incorporated in
1973, currently operates as The
Grand Theatre.
Board treasurer W. Wesley De

Hugh and I accompanied by his
sisters, Marjorie and Les Adams,
Exeter, and lfazcl Corbett, of Hen-
sall, called at the Lockhart Funeral
Horne in Mitchell, last Saturday
evening to pay respects to the fami-
ly of our late cousin, Helen (Maier)
Fowler. Helen was born and raised
in this area and known by many
hcrc. Funeral service was on Sunday
at 2 p.m.

melt, Cambridge.

friend Stan and I met a year ago in
August 1987 at Point Farms, Godd-
rich, while camping. We enjoyed
our visits to their place and their
visits hcrc. We had wonderful times
talking and sharing precious mo-
ments together. Doris will certainly
be missed. Sympathy goes out to
her husband Gordon and his three
children.

An endowment fund of S709,746,
which had been held for five years
in accordance with the provincial
Ministry requirements, was released
and used to pay down bank loans in
the same amount. The theatre com-
pany is now free of bank debt, al-
though it still carries a long-term,
interest-free loan from the City of
London for S120,000, which will
be paid off in full by 1994.
The company's balance sheet now
shows an accumulated surplus of
S191,128 and an endowment fund
of $120,000.
The 1987/88 season was the sec-
ond produced by former Artistic Di-
rector Larry Lillo,- now with the
Vancouver Playhouse, and Admin-
istrative Director Elaine Calder.
Paid attendance, including the six -
play mainstagc season, the McMa-
nus Studio Theatre productions for
young people, and two special at-
tractions on the mainstagc, totalled
129,230. Percentage attendance for
the six mainstagc productions were
as follows: Bom Yesterday 79.3%;
• Papers 67.2c%c; Filthy Rich
75.7%; Top Girls 67.6°Jr; Mass
Appeal 70.1%; Rock and Roll
86.5%.
The total percentage attendance
for the mainstagc season was 75
percent.
Finally, the theatre also managed
to put 570,000 into repairs and re-
placements, starting a new program
of capital asset management after
several seasons of necessary ne-
glect.
