League alterations
There will be some pretty ma-
jor changes in the -structure of
Junior D hockey this coming sea-
son. Three new clubs, Alviston,
Paris and Burford, are joining the
--Western-Junior D league. That
was cause enough for the league
to re -organize itself into three di-
visions and the news is good for,
area hockey fans.
Instead of living 24 kilometres
apart -and playing in separate
sions, Exeter Hawks and Lucan
Irisli will find themselves in the
same grouping. Not only is that
expedient in terms of travel -time,
. it will revitalize the old rivalry
between the two teams.
That's exactly the kind of thing
the league needs if it hopes to
draw fans in an increasingly
cornpetitvc branch of sports.
Lucan and Exeter will be
grouped with RlitchcH, Scaforth,
' Brussels, Wellesley, and. Tavis-.
tock..-
A -second group will be made
up of Lambeth, Belmont, Tha-
mesford, Mount Brydgcs, Thcd-
ford and Alviston. The third divi-
sion consists -of Langton,- Delhi,
Oshwckcn, Burford, Paris and
Ayr.
The playoffs promise to be
much more interesting under this
new format. Rather than the byes
which were a Common feature
last year, there will be playdowns
-- sort of.
Each division will finish their
regular season schedule in tact.
But once playoffs begin, -the mid-
dle division will be dissolved.
Our division will absorb Atvis-
ton, Thedford and Mount Brydgcs
while Lambeth, Belmont and Tha=
mesford will move to the remain-
ing division. -
Sound complicated:'
That will leave two 10. temp -di- "
visions. Two teams in each divi-
sion will not make the playoffs.
Now, having plowed through all
that, what we have left is this --
two eight team divisions. From
there divisional champions will be
decided and the top team in each
division will play off for all the
marbles.
It sounds complicated on paper,
but it should make for some very
good hockey as the season pro-,
gresses.
There is one other major advan-
tage to the system. By returning
to Targe zones, individual teams
will be able to draw talent from a
wider arca. That will create a deep
talent pool without increasing the
number of imports (currently two
imported players can be carded).
Lucan try -outs
Lucan Irish have announced the
dates of their try -outs. Carflp will
run from 8-11 p.m. August 29
and from 7:30 - 10:30 on, -August
30.
Irish lest just two overage
players last season and with. Dave
Revington coming back as head
coach for the third consecutive
season, Lucan should have a con-
tender this year.
Ken Freeman will be taking the
place of Jim Hcrn as general man--
ager..
an-ager. Hcrn will remain on the ex-
ecutive, however.
