Rinks, diamonds and beaches
It's unthinkable in the middle of August, but there are signs all oyer
the place, -
The hockey season is almost here.
Pete Pocklington and Wayne Grctzky put baseball on.the back burn-
er this week, internationally Speaking. And the South Huron Ree
Board found thetns_elves discussing the difficulties of ice -time as a cur- .
rent problem.
Exeter Junior D Hawks are .coking for local talent. New general
manager Al Quinn told me Thursday that he has sent out roughly 40
invitations to players in the -area; but he's sure he missed a few.
There are anumber of empty spots to be filled after several -veteran
players Went over -age last season. •
The Junior club Will -be holding try -outs Tuesday,- August 23 from
9:30 to 11 p.m. at the Stephen Township arena. They will repeat that
time frame Thursday, -August 25.
• Still. -some summer
Just before we•go rushing into the next hockey season, Exeter Ex-
press have got something for all those baseball fans who have given
up on the Jays. but are too proud to root for Detroit Tigers as they
head for a pennant win.
Express are -hosting the Senior D Ontario Championship tourna-
ment September 3-5 at the South Huron Rec Centre.
Express, Timmins; frorn, thc Georgian Bay Baseball Association,
Everett, from the.York-Simcoe Baseball Association, and Wheatley,
from the Sun Parlour Baseball -Association are all confirmed entries in
the tourney. The remaining -four teams will he announced later as the
qualifying playdowns decide the various league rcprescntauvcs.
Express won the tournament -two years ago when they defeated Es-
sex in the final. Essex won the competition last year.
An added feature for the tournarricnt will be the.expert officiating of
London umpires being imported front the Intcrcounty league.
NVayne's been glitied - -
Flicking stations on .the TV set late one night this week, i carne
upon Entertainment Tonight: Liza Gibbons was doing a report
on the Wayne Gretzky trade and she informed millions of already ill-
informed Americans that the leader of .the "Democratic Party" in Cana-
da requested the government do something to keep Wayne here. 'In a
span of 30 seconds; she mentioned the Mounties and our Arctic condi
tions by way of a quote from that democrat.
This woman. needs to get out more.
Wayne's story making it on Entertainment Tonight must- be
seen as a measurement of his stature as a celebrity, though I'in not
sure what sort of measurement that would be. •
-
I must adrnit that I.fcel genuinely bad about his departure to the
Stales. It's a hard feeling to explain -- sort of like the feeling I got the
day we cut down a huge row of poplar trees in our -back yard in Brtnt-
ford..Thcywere just temporary trees -- there to provide shade while
o)13 r trees grew -- but they grew up with me..and i always expected
them to be there. -
It'll make a good movie someday: Small town boy -wonder makes
big; becomes hero to millions of'smail town. boys across Canada;
ends up in L. A.; barely visible in the smog, too far away, very sad.
Oh well. So Pocklington sold him like so many pounds of chopped
liver. At least the -Great One lives close to the beach. -
We're stuck up here with the Leafs.
