ZURICH.- Zurich council has de-
cided to forego sidewalk' repairs for
yet another year in the hope the vil-
Iagc may become eligible for a
PRIDE grant next year. -
PRIDE will pay 50 percent of the
cost of sidewalk repairs, but if Zu-
rich undertakes the project them-
selves, the full cost will be borne
by village taxpayers.
"Do we want to gamble .another
• year and get 50 c'cnt dollars'?" asked
reeve Bob Fisher, who was con-
cerned this project is well overdue.
• Clerk -treasurer Maureen Regier
confirmed Zurich has over S20,000
' set aside for sidewalk repairs. At
$12:50 a foot for present sidewalk
costs, they have only enough funds
for a third -of a mile.
Regier also stated that nothing
was wrong with this year's .PRIDE
application. Out of 300 applica-
tions, only 70 were accepted.
"We can take a chance one more
year and sec What happens," said
councillor Paul Morrison.
Fisher pointed out every year of
delay meant an increase in the pro-
ject's cost.
"Every year you put it off you are
looking at another buck a foot,
probably" he said.

• Council decided to gamble on a
successful PRIDE application next
year, otherwise •the village will
have.. to rebuild only those side-
walks -it can afford.
Council is considering a restruc-
ture of the Zurich Bingo•Board in
order to keep the organization run-
ning. The board will be expanded
to include another . member from
Zurich at largo
"It's- just a way for us to keep a
linger on it and for Maureen to.still
sign cheques," explained Fisher.
. Although Zurich receives 40 per-
cent of the bingo profits, the vil-
lage cannot have a bingo license be-
cause it is not • a charitable
organization. The Zurich Lions,
the Chamber of Commerce, the
Figure Skating Club, and the Rec-
reation Centre arc represented on the
currcnt board.
"None of these people right now
will sign a- license because they
don't have the insurance," said Fish-
• er. He has been assured the village
insurance can be used to cover the
bingo at no extra cost.
The present license expires in
September and restructuring of the
Ix)ard will have to be determined by
that time.
