Show features 100 quilts

quilts will be on display at Huron
County Pioneer Museum:s 4th An-
nual Quilt Show at the end of the •
month, organizers predict.
The show opens Friday, August
19 at the museum on North Street
in Godcrich.
"It's not a contest. fi's an oppor-
tunity for women in thc arca just to
show their quilts," said museum
spokesman Jacqui Brown.
The quilts will hang around .the
steam engine in the museum's his-
tory hall.

"We're going to have labels at-
tached to -each quilt saying who
made it and explaining a lintel
about each piece," Brown said.
Some quilts may be available for -
purchase, although the museum
will not. deal directly with sales.
Those which are for sale will 'be
clearly tfiarked on the cards, and a
contact number will be available.
for interested buyers to deal with
owncrs privately.
In previous years the show has
incorporated bedspreads and other
home-made fabric articles, but this
ycar it consists strictly of quilts.
Most home-made quitls are sewn
privaatcly by individuals or groups,
although anyone can contribute to
the display.
Friends of the Museum are sub-
mitting a special quilt for display
in the museum lobby.
Connie Egan. head of the Friends
of the Museum committee which is
organizing the quilt show; said
patches of the quilt have been made
by ladies in Huron County.
The quilt consists of sixteen
patches. Each patch features a pat
tem which depicts life in the coun-
ty, including pioneer scenes. Ohter
squares picture arca landmarks such
as the floral clock' and the pioneer
museum.
Although it may not be complete
in time for the show, the quilt will ,
be displayed in the museum lobby.
Egan welcomes anyone to co to the
muscum to help with the quilting.
Another interesting quilt has been
submitted by Marcello Richard, of
Godcrich.
"It was given to me by my moth-
er-in-law. She got it in an old
house they bought (in Nile) about
thirty years ago, and it came from
the original owners," Richard said.
He has often considered disposing
of the ancient quilt, but now he is
glad he kept it for so long.
"I'm sort of a pack rat, so I just
hung onto it...and now I'm glad
that I did," he laughed.
, Richard saw the newspaper adver-
tisement requesting quilts, and de-
cided on impulse to submit the
piece.
The old mixed with the new is
one of the attractive things about
the show, according to Brown.
"It could be old and it could be
new. It doesn't matter. It will all be
there."
• Anyone who would like to sub-
mit a piece should do so before Au-
gust 16, when the display is being
set up. -
The opening will be' held on Fri-
day, August 19 at 8 p.m. The show
is scheduled to run during regular
museum hours until Labour Day.
