Beac12 hemess packed for holiday weekend
GRAND BEND - Recent rains
have finally brought back the green
to arca lawns, gardens and golf
courses, as well as being a blessing
to fanner's crops.
Civic holiday weekend brought
crowds to the Bend, and beaches
were packed with people enjoying
the fine weather, although the water
was rather rough on Sunday. The
higher waves and an undertow were
a challenge to swimmers.
Thc sympathy of the community
is extended to Brian Pearen and
family in the d:;;:h of his mother,
Mrs. Doris Pearen last ween.
Thcrc was a memorial service at the
Grand Bend United Church last
Thursday evening at 7 p.m., with a
lunch provided by the UCW.
Oakwood Park Association has
had a very busy July, beginning
with a General Meeting on July 3,
where among several topics on the
agenda, the OPA voted to donate
the sum of S1,000 to the Grand
Bend Medical Center Building
Fund.
Swimming lessons began on
Who is Audrey II?
July 5 for all Oakwood Park chil-
dren and will continue throughout
August, as the children -work with a
qualified instructor toward earning
their badges.
A Red Cross Water Safety Pro-
gram was held on July 12, for all
Oakwood residents, on aspects of
safety in both swimming and boat-
ing.
July 23 marked the day of the an-
nual O.P.A. Cocktail Party, held at
the cottage of O.P.A. President
Bob Earley. The party provides an
opportunity for all the summer res-
idents to get together, with good
music -and delicious food. Thc food
was catered this year by Barbara
Gower, of Barbara's Naturally and
up to her usual standard of excel-
lence.
The annual Games Day for the
O.P.A. children was held on July
26, put on by the Recreation Com-
mittee. Over 50 kids and adults en-
joyed a variety of games on the
beach, including egg toss and a
scavenger hunt. The day ended with
hot dogs, doughnuts and pop for
all.
The August O.P.A. calendar is
much less eventful, with swimming
lesson continued as usual.
Congratulations to the O.P.A.
Executive for another fine job this
summer.
