TORONTO - The 'enrolment
•deadline for the final year of the
five-year Red Meat ,Plan. for beef
and sheep producers is October 4,
1988,1 Ontario Minister'f Agri-
culturl and Food Jack Riddell an-
nounced this week.
"The plan was introduced in
1984 as a five-year commitment to
boost the quality and productivity
of Ontario's' beef and sheep indus-
' tries -.and has succeeded in doing
so," Riddell said. To date, more
than 9,000 producers have enrolled
in the plan which includes herd and
flock genetic improvement, health
and management components.
Funding for the program will end
in March of next year. The dead-
line for submitting grant applica-
tions to the ministry is February
1, 1989 to ensure that the process-
ing of applications is completed by
March 31, Riddcll said. •
A mid-term evaluation by Price
-Waterhouse last year showed that
the plan was meeting its objec-
tive. For example, cow -calf and
slaughter/stocker producers realized
a ten per cent increase in growth
rate during the first three years of
the program and a majority of
sheep producers reported similar ,
productivity gains.
"The Rcd Meat Plan has helped
to make the whole industry more
efficient, and competitive," Riddcll
said. "Our challenge now is to de-
velop new strategies to further ad-
vance the red meat industry. I've
asked ministry staff to consult
with the beef and sheep industries
over the summer to determine pro-
ducer and industry needs."
