triathlon
draws
450
• PINERY PROVINCIAL PARK
- The fittest of the fit -braved the
cold waters of Lake Huron on Sat•
urJay to compete at the Pinery for
one in the sends of Royal Lepage
triathlons.
About 450 competitors arrived to
.enter the gruefi endurance race; ,
cov,rinb;a•750 metre swim, a 5.5
kilometre run through the woods, a
41) kilometre bike race, and another
5.5 km run back to the..finish line.
Graham Fraser, who organized
the e. vent,,explairicd that frigid wa-
ter temperatures, hovering around
the 18 degree celsius mark; pushed
the swim to 750 Metres from the
--plaiine-(-l. kilometre
• "'We wanted to.. make it safe,"
said- Fraser.
Vince Beretta of London placed
first at the finish line with a.total
time of 1:48.. Beth Primrose of
Scarborough was the first •fdmale
to finish with a time of 1:58...
Both first place finishers are points

end. The cold water prompted the shortening of the first leg of the Royal Lepage triathlon in
the Pinery Park to 750 metres.

blow out which saw a 4-0 lead
turn into a 9-0 rout in Great
Lakes action.
A two RBi single in the sec-
ond inning by Steve Pearce got
things under way. Pcarec later
singled to scorc Will Sei tjcns in
the fourth. He added one more
RBi single in the seventh •- the
only earned run Lakcsidc allowed
in that inning.

to her RBI record by hitting in four
runs. Morgan went the ditancc for
Crediton, notching 12 strikeouts.
She pulled her team out of a tough
spot in the first inning when she re-
tired three hatters in a row with two
on base. .
Cowgirls shone June 27 when
they handed. Parkhill a 13-2, Toss.
Taking the lead in the second in-
ning, Crediton turned in a sturdy de-
fensive effort, allowing only one
run in the second and One more in
the fifth. That,.. combined with
steady hitting, gave them the victo-
rv. •
Kelli Phillips led Cowgirls offen-
sivcly Alzi444.4 triple. and .a single.
Brenda Wilds, Morgan and Judy
Steeper contributed one double and
on_c single each.
Adding singles to move the run-
ners around the bases were Tammy
Rcgicr, Williams, Pauline Brannon
and Kathy (Myrtle) Gicicn.
Morgan pitched the entire game,
allowing nine hits and striking out
eight batters, and using her change -
'up to-hold'ParkhiII down.. _
Offensive problems caused Crcdi-
ton to split a pair of games against
Dublin June 20 and June 22. Edg-
ing Dublin 14-13 in thcir first
meeting, Cowgirls were over-
powered 13-8 in the second match -
up.

Royals split pair
STRATFORD - Exctcr. Royals
split a pair of games last week in
the.. South Perth Fastball -League
with two Stratford clubs providing
the opposition.
Tuesday night they travelled to •
Stretford where they lost a -5-3 de
vision to Stratford Lcyscrs. Royals
fell behind early as the host club
scored single runs in the second and
fourth innings. However, they took
• a 3-2 lead in the fifth by counting
three tunes on four hits. • •
Stratford Countered by scoring
three times in the bottom of the
fifth for a -5-3 Icad and the. victory.
Brian Ilodgins was thestarting
and losing pitcher as he gave up
four runs, three -of which were
earned, on five hits in four and.onc-
ttrird innings. Ile struck out three
-and--issued onc-walk -
Dennis Carty worked three and
two -third innings in relief and al-
lowed one run on six hits. He
struck. out two and did not walk a
batter.
Offensively, Royals wcrc led by
short stop.Greg Wise who had
three hits in four trips: Pete Tuck-
-cy, Scott Brintnell; Doug Todd,
Tom. Tordoff, Dennis Carty and
Dan I leywood had one hit each.
Wednesday night in Hcnsall,

tered ten hits in a complete game
6-3 victory over Stratford Optical.
Heywood struck out nine and
walked none.
Doug Todd's one out, bases load-
ed double was the key hit in the
five hour inning as Royals scored
four tunes to erase a 3-1 deficit and
take a lead they never relinquished.

Heywood, Tordoff, Al Pym and
