Propercare urged
for that delicate silk
Silk is fashion's answer to
spring daffodils. Unlike
blooming flpwers, your
delicate spring silks can be
among your wardrobe's most
enduring components, given
the right care.
The special feel of silk and
its ability to take brilliant dye
colors are keeping the fabric
at the height of popularity..
Silk remains popular in
scarves and ties, blouses,
dresses, skirts, suits and in
lingerie. •
Silk gives up soil readily'
and is very resistant to
wrinkles. However, silks need
some special precautions in
cleaning and handling. The
International Fabricare In-
stitute (IFI), the world-wide
association of professional
launderers and drycleaners
sensitive to silk, points out
some of silk's strengths and
weaknesses, arid how to deal
with theta in liktring for your
silk garments.
Strong light not only fades
the dyes and brighteners us-
ed in many silks, but sunlight
weakens and yellows the silk
itself. $o keep your silks in a
cool, dark, dry place.
Silk also yellows with age
and frequent ironing. Hot
ironing temperatures
damage the fabric and cause
discoloring. Use a low setting
when doing your touch-up
ironing.
Your drycleaner often can
whiten a yellowed silk gar-
ment, but there are limits.
Bleaches can harm both the
fabric and the optical
brighteners used in silks.
Your cleaner will do
everything possible to restore
silks without damaging the
fabric.

The chloride salts in
deodorants, perspiration and
salt water damage silk fibers.
The salts will do less damage
and your clothes will last
longer if you have them clean-
ed as soon after being soiled
as possible. Not only does silk
become harder to clean with
age, but the dirt attracts
moths and insects that can at-
tack fabric finishes. A profes-

delicate fabric. Point your
