(2) Synovex S for steers can now be used in steer calves from 400 pounds to market. Previously Synovex S could only be used in steers weighing 600 pounds or more. The Canadian Bureau 'of Veterinary Drugs have made three recommendations after reviewing data submitted by the manufacturer, Syntex Corp. Synovex contains naturally occurring hor- mones. The low levels of hor- mones occurring in Synovex implants do not present any danger to huma11 health. Implants improve average daily gain and feed conver- sion. They are a tool of the trade and recommended in order to keep beef. production costs down. Stan Paquette, Associate Agricultural Representative Sprayer maintenance tips I saved a few ideas from the April sprayer clinics in Perth County. These are a few tips to help your sprayer work more effectively and last longer. Nozzle set up The flat fan nozzle is the best choice for most foliar ap- plications. The 80 degree flat fan nozzles need about 25-33 percent overlap in pattern from one nozzle to the next. This overlap is necessary to produce a uniform delivery rate of spray product to the target area. While the pat- terns overlap it is important that the patterns;, shouldn't touch one another. Each noz- zle should be (u: -led about 10 degrees relative to the boom to allow the overlap without poottern interference. If the, patterns of adjacent nozzles collide with each other, large spray droplets will be created where the two patterns come together. The spray will not be unformly delivered to the target and wi!I not penetrate the leaf canopy very effectively. So you ask. "How do I get this 10 degree turn on every— centrifugal pump lite is quick nozzle?" priming. He 'was pooh-poohed 15 years ago but Charlie Munro, the Drumbo dairy farmer and former president of the Cana- dian Federation of Agriculture, sounded the war- ning then. , He said the entire agriculture community should be on guard against• the downgrading of the On- tario Veterinary College and the Ontario Agricultural College. . This was back when the University of Guelph was becoming a full-fledged, degree -granting institution. Munro was not ecstatic to see the two world-famous col- leges being swallowed up by the university. Ile said both colleges could become the poor cousins of the big univer- sity. He suggested grants and monies would go to keep the university going and the col- leges would be downgraded. bne foot in the fUflbYXj7 Letters are epprousted by Bob Trotter EICsk Rd Elmira Ont N3B iC 7_ Ile was accused of talking sour grapes. But his fears were justified because the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) has been accorded only limited accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA). It seems incredible that the OVC, a college that won inter- national acclaim in many areas in past years, has now become what is tantamount to a' second-grade in titution. When the OV(, came to Guelph in the early' 1920s. such distinguished scholars as Dr. Andrew L. MacNabb, Dr. Trevor Lloyd Jones, Dr. J.A. Henderson and Dr. W.J. R. Fowler helped to give the college a unique place in Canada and a highly - respected spot in veterinary medicine around the world. Limited accreditation means the college has been reduced in status from full ac- creditation, a second class college. Why? Because a better balance is needed between the financial resources and the programs of the college. "Construction and renova- tion (should be) initiated to correct inadequacies in classrooms. laboratories, of- fices and clinical work spaces. Also. faculty numbers and especially expertise (should) be increased and ad- ditional time be scheduled for professional development, research and other scholarly pursuits." Student numbers should be reduced until adequate facul- ty numbers and physical facilities can be provided.. These recommendations in the AVMA report did not sur- prise Donald Forster, presi- dent of the university. He commended the faculty and staff of the veterinary col- lege for working so hard to maintain the reputation and integrity of the program. But many of the problems stem' directly from the chronic underfunding Ontario universities have experienced for a number of years and "every effort will be made to secure support from govern- ment and other sources -to remedy problems which have been identified." i hope and pray that Presi- dent Forster will be sue - may be left behind. A couple of rinses with clear water is also a good idea. Particularly if you are just cleaning the equipment out between crops and dif- ferent types of herbicides. When you're putting the sprayer away at the end of the season, follow the same washing and - rinsing procedure. Better than oil Some people like to store the sprayer nozzles and pump in oil. The concensus from the sprayer company reps. is that antifreeze is better than oil. The procedure suggested is that following the cleaning and rinsing of the equipment, 4 litres of antifreeze and 4 litres of water are added to the spray tank. This should be enough to run the machine and fill. the pump and lines. The antifreeze will dissolve any remaining water droplets that might freeze or cause corrosion. The antifreeze will lubricate and protect the pump, valves and lines. You can probably save some of this storage solution to do more than one year. Art Lawson, Associate Agr. Representative, Perth County cessful in his attempts. As mentioned earlier, farmers - a few of them, at any rate - expressed concern away back in 1964 when the college became part of the university. Agriculture, even then, was taking a back seat to arts and all the other frills that go with a big university. Agriculture is still left out in the hack 40 when both provincial and federal budgets are set. It's a crying shame that OVC must suffer such a stigma.
