Senior high school soccor teams lose in semifinals
The soccer season ended in
the rain and mud of Friday
for both South Huron's juniors
and seniors. Losing in 'the
semi-finals the teams ended
their improvingly successful
seasons.
For the first time in South
Huron history a senior soccer
team qualified for the
playoffs. A very respectable
league record put them in'
fourth place in Huron -Perth.
Making history the seniors
played the number one
finishers in Clinton, losing 1-0
in an even match.
The Redmen's field was a
mudpit, making it very dif-
ficult for the players to get
footing. South Huron coach
Jim Workman felt his team
was especially disadvantaged
because "our type of game is
a passing game, it is hard to
pass in those conditions."
The forwards were
especially timid about
shooting. Clinton had many
more shots on net. Panther
goalie Rick Helm saved Ex-
eter from several Clinton
breakaways. Helm had a
superb game. Workman said
it was the best he had ever
seen Rick play.
The teams were of com-
parable skill. Only last week
in league play the Clinton -
Exeter game was.scoreless.
Missing a penalty -kick late in
the tirst half disheartened
South Huron. 1l was a shot
they couldn't afford to miss as
the Redmen came out strong
in the second half to score
early.
Central Huron advanced to
the finals against Stratford
North Western
Coach Workman is pleased
with the soccer season. As a
first time soccer coach he is
looking optimistically toward
a better 1984 season. The
team will graduate several
experienced players but
many- talented junior players
are moving up to fill the team.
The juniors heartbreaking
loss came from a double over-
time shoot and against the top

Isn't it better to have a
John Deere
Lawn Tractor for
10 years than a
"bargain" tractor
for 4 or 5?
JOHN DEERE
John Deere Lawn Tractors that
are 10 to 12 years old are not at all
uncommon. In fact many of our
original lawn tractors, built in 1966,
are still in use today. On the otner
hand the average life span of a
"bargain" lawn tractor is estimated
at only four to five years. So you
ccin see why it pays to buy a John
Deere. .
There's no denying you'll pro-
bably have to pay a little more for
a John Deere. Up front anyway.
But, when you consider how
much longer they last, you're
almost sure to save real money in
the long run.
Choose from two great John
Deere lawn Tractors, the 11 h.p.
111 with a 38" mower or a 16 h.p.
116 with a 46" mower. The Model
111 cuts an acre an hour and the
Model 116 will cut an acre and a
half an hour. -

Four South Huron track

qualified for the Regionals
this Friday and Saturday in
'Tillsonburg. The top four
finishers from WOSSA last
week advance to this meet
which narrows the 1:ompeti-
lion for OFSSA in Kitchener

The changing weather last'

on Wednesday. but it rained
so hard Thursday that the
meet was postponed the first
time in WOSSA history, to
Friday.

The senior girls 4x100 relay

positioned Stratford Nor-
thwestern Huskies.
As the fourth place team SH
had to play in Stratford.
Coach Bruce Eccles dubbed
the game "a real mudbowl"
but realizes that both teams
had to suffer through the
harsh conditions. The goalie
especially had difficulty
maintaining footing on the
muddy field.
The junior teams were also
quite evenly matched. The on-
ly Ilusky goal was from a
penalty kick. Steve Gould
scored South Huron's goal on
a good passing play.
With a 1-1 tie the gene was
forced into a 15 minute over-
time. South Huron's passing
game was hindered by the
mud. A second scoreless over-
time brought the game to a
five shot shoot-out. SH goalie
Ernie Szabo couldn't get a
grip in the mud as Nor-
thwestern scored its hard
fought victory.
It was a disappointing way
for the juniors to end their
season, but making the ,
playoffs was a great achieve
ment. Last year's was (he
first South Huron junior
playoff team. Eccles at-
tributes the recent improve-
ment in high school soccer to
the excellent local minor soc-
cer system.
The improvements will con-
tinue until South Huron
achieves a Huron -Perth soc-
cer championship.
