First playoff for seniors Times -Advocate, May 25, 1983 Page 11 Senior high school soccor teams lose in semifinals The soccer season ended in the rain and mud of Friday for both South Huron's juniors and seniors. Losing in 'the semi-finals the teams ended their improvingly successful seasons. For the first time in South Huron history a senior soccer team qualified for the playoffs. A very respectable league record put them in' fourth place in Huron -Perth. Making history the seniors played the number one finishers in Clinton, losing 1-0 in an even match. The Redmen's field was a mudpit, making it very dif- ficult for the players to get footing. South Huron coach Jim Workman felt his team was especially disadvantaged because "our type of game is a passing game, it is hard to pass in those conditions." The forwards were especially timid about shooting. Clinton had many more shots on net. Panther goalie Rick Helm saved Ex- eter from several Clinton breakaways. Helm had a superb game. Workman said it was the best he had ever seen Rick play. The teams were of com- parable skill. Only last week in league play the Clinton - Exeter game was.scoreless. Missing a penalty -kick late in the tirst half disheartened South Huron. 1l was a shot they couldn't afford to miss as the Redmen came out strong in the second half to score early. Central Huron advanced to the finals against Stratford North Western Coach Workman is pleased with the soccer season. As a first time soccer coach he is looking optimistically toward a better 1984 season. The team will graduate several experienced players but many- talented junior players are moving up to fill the team. The juniors heartbreaking loss came from a double over- time shoot and against the top DART LEAGUE CHAMPS -- The Swot team won the league championship of the Exeter mixed dart league. Above. Ron. JOHN DEERE John Deere Lawn Tractors that are 10 to 12 years old are not at all uncommon. In fact many of our original lawn tractors, built in 1966, are still in use today. On the otner hand the average life span of a "bargain" lawn tractor is estimated at only four to five years. So you ccin see why it pays to buy a John Deere. . There's no denying you'll pro- bably have to pay a little more for a John Deere. Up front anyway. Coach Bruce Eccles dubbed the game "a real mudbowl" but realizes that both teams had to suffer through the harsh conditions. The goalie especially had difficulty maintaining footing on the muddy field. The junior teams were also quite evenly matched. The on- ly Ilusky goal was from a penalty kick. Steve Gould scored South Huron's goal on a good passing play. With a 1-1 tie the gene was forced into a 15 minute over- time. South Huron's passing game was hindered by the mud. A second scoreless over- time brought the game to a five shot shoot-out. SH goalie Ernie Szabo couldn't get a grip in the mud as Nor- thwestern scored its hard fought victory.
